Page Twelve — THE GRYPHON Thursday, November 18,1976 ‘ fii ‘If* SENIOR HIGH GIRLS PAR TICIPATE IN BEAUTY PAG EANT — Four girls from Rock> Mount Senior High competed in the annual Rocliy Mount Beauty Pageant. They are Terri Berry [left],, a member of the Pres ident’s Cabinet, Chairman of the Social Committee; Ruth Battle, [right], a Varsity cheer leader Amy Rodwell, President of the National Honor Society at Senior High; and Julie Hicks, a Masquer in Dramatics II, and a ballet student. All four girls are seniors. mm « mmmmmm ^wm Senior High Girls Display Beauty Four girls from Rocky Mount Senior participated in tlie Miss Rocky Mount Pageant ; on November 2. They are Amy Rodwell, Julie Hicks, Terri Berry, and Ruth Battle. Amy Rodwell, who plays the piano in the High School Jazz Band, also played in the pageant for her talent. When asked to give her overall opinion on the happen ings of the show, Amy replied, ■‘It’s really been a wonderful experience, one I’ll always remember.” Julie Hicks did a monologue of a small child. In her pinafore ■ and pantaloons, along with her Raggedy Ann, Julie shared an experience of a “very bad” day in the life of a little girl. Julie commented, “There was no. rivalry among the girls. We were all in this event together and we were happy for the winners.” Terri Berry was to do a Ballet Dance but after hurting her leg during practice, she could not perform. She was presented, however, before the show and once again with the other girls at the end. When asked to relate her experience, Terri smiled and said, ‘‘I’m sorry I missed the pageant, but I’m looking forward to entering next year.” Ruth' did a Dramatic Reading. She portrayed a 23 year old girl filled with wonderment and questions of life in general. Ruth found a friend in her mirror and soon worked her problems out with herself. Ruth said, “1 love to compete, I just loved the whole pageant.” Karen Jean Smith, a sopho more at UNC-CH, is our new Miss Rocky Mount. Karen sang ‘‘On A Clear Day” for her talent. In addition to her being crowned queen, Karen was also named Miss Congeniality. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Smith. Other contestants in the p«XgCu.rii iVCr^ Strickland, Brenda Louis Coop er, and Wanda DeEtte Triplett. Phylis Teresa Tabron was second runner up, and Donna Lynn Walston was first runner Jeanne Swanner Robertson, former Miss North Carolina, emceed the pageant. Sandra W. Penfield, last year’s Miss Rocky Mount, gave her farewell V Students Join In Bike-A-Thon The American Diabeties Association held its annual Bike-a-thon on Sunday, Nov. 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The purpose of the Bike-a-thon was to help raise money for Americans with diabetes. Kyle Pittman, the representa tive from Rocky Mount Senior High, stated that it was very important that Senior High students get involved. He also said that there was competition between the schools in the area. Each participant got as many sponsors as possible.
