JV Rundown Coach Roscoe Batts starts his first season as Head JV Coach this year. The Junior Varsity plays its games prior to the Varsity games. Here’s a rundown on the players: Steve Berry — Guard, 6 ft.. See all over court, good passer, effective from the outside, good defensive player. Rodney Birth — Forward, 6 ft. 1 in., best defensive player on the team, good offensive player, gets down court fast on fast break. Kelvin Hart — Forward Guard, 6 ft. 1 in., good attitude toward basketball, good defen sive player, excellent freethrow shooter. Daryle Lewis — Center, 6 ft. 5 in. Big man, affective inside, good rebounder, good defensive player, good shot blocker. Michael Lewis — Forward, 6 ft. 4 in. Outstanding shooter, good defensive player, good high and low post man, smooth shooter. Billy Noble — Guard, 5 ft. 7 in. Good defensive player, good penetrator. Bobby Peele — Guard, S ft. 9 in. Good ball handling, good wing man, effective outside, good defensive player. Anthony Pinkett — Center, 6 ft. 3 in. Good defensive player. Ricky Ricks -r- Forward, 6 ft. 3 in., most effective inside, good shot blocker, good shooter, good defensive player. Linwood Silver — Guard, 5 ft. 6 in. Good ball handling, effective outside, good defen sive player. Stephen Smith — Forward, 6 ft. 1 in. Good high post man, very effective defensive player, very effective on the inside. Raymond Williams —XJuard/ Forward, good shooter, excel lent offensive player, good fast break man. Timothy Williams — Guard, 5 ft. 9 in. Very effective outside, operate the offense, good defensive player. The Gryphon Cagers coached by Mr. Reggie Henderson are expected to have an exceptional year. They hope to improve last year’s record of 14-11. The team consists of two seniors and only three players with a great deal of experience, but the team’s all round talent could be adequate enough to carry the Gryphs to a winning season and perhaps the state playoffs. An added plus for this year’s team is the acquisition of Coach Henderson, who compiled a mark of 105-7 while coaching Parker and Wilson Junior High. Coach Henderson gave the following analysis of the players. Reggie Barrett (6-1) — Henderson stated that Reggie, a probable starter, plays good defense, uses his quickness well, and has a shooting ability to match. Dennis Coit (6-2) — Dennis, a returning letterman, will play swing man, and according to Henderson rebounds well and hustles continally. Freddie Woods (5-10) — Will start at point guard where he can display his team leadership. He is also a fine shooter and plays adequate defense. Hyman Hunter (5-11) — Henderson considers Hyman the purest shooter on the team. He will play six or seventh man on the team. Oie Osterkamp (6-0) — Henderson reported Oie as being the complete hustler, who plays good defense and should play the point guard position. His passing ability is excellent. Terry McKnight (6-2), is the team garbageman, who hustles and is capable of playing either center or forward according to Henderson. Richard Fountain (6-0), is an exceptional shooter who should play a lot against zone defenses to break them down said Coach Henderson. Vincent Gray (6-0) can play either small forward or guard. His ability to hit the open man and shooting are two more of his finer points. Ricky Mercer (6-3) — Henderson reported that Ricky has the best leaping ability on the team. Forward, his most suitable position, will allow him to use his quickness effectively. Greg Lucas (6-0), who will play forward hustles well and is an adequate rebounder. Steve Cantrell (6-6), has a fine, soft touch for a center said Coach Henderson. Steve will see a lot of action and is very capable around the basket. Charles Williams (6-6) — Henderson noted Buck’s out standing rebounding and good defense. He plays well inside and outside offensively and moves well without the ball. Varsity The Rocky Mount Senior High Gryphs turned in a losing debut to Head Coach Reggie Hender son, as the Goldsboro Cougars ran to a 62-48 win over the Gryphs. Junior Buck Williams led the losing effort with 15 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots. Williams also tallied the first slam and dunk of the season. Senior Ricky Mercer added 8 points. The Gryphons shot a poor 44 per cent from the floor and had a 50 per cent showing at the free throw line. Goldsboro shot 57 per cent from the floor and 70 per cent from the charity stripe. The Gryphs held leads of 6-2, 7-4, and 9-8 before Goldsboro went ahead to stay with 1:29 left in the first quarter. Junior Varsity The Gryphon Junior Varsity began its season on a good note with a 57-44 victory over the Goldsboro Junior Varsity. The Gryphs showed a balanced attack. Mike Lewis scored 10 points followed by Daryl Lewis, Bobby Peele, and Rodney Birth with eight points each. Rocky Mount out- rebounded Goldsboro 52-37. Fifteen of those rebounds were seized by Daryl Lewis. Mike Lewis and Birth held their own under the boards with eight and seven rebounds respectively. The Gryphs led 29-16 at the half and opened up a 45-27 advantage in the third period. Goldsboro cut it down a mere five points by the games’ end at 57-49 as Coach Roscoe Batts cleared his bench.
