Play Mediocre
Girls Play Impressively
The Rocky Mount Senior High
Junior Varsity now has a 8 to 6
record. Coach Roscoe'Batts says
he is very pleased with the way
the team is playing this year
even though .there are a few
problems. Coach Batts says his
team works well together and
are ver^ unselfish towards one
another.
Games since the last issue are
as follows: Durham Hillside on
December 17th, a score of 92 to
70 in our favor; Goldsboro on
December 18th, a score of 62 to
72, a loss for Rocky Mount.
West Edgecombe brought
Rocky Mount another great
defeat with a score* of 61 to 45.
On January 7 fhe Gryphons
played Durham Senior and lost
53 to 59. The game with
Greenville on January 14 ended
in a score of 67 to 64, Rocky
Mount’s victory. West Edge
combe came out to win the game
on the 15th with a six point lead,
55 to 49. The recent games
played have been with North
eastern, a score of 79 to 74, our
favor. The game with Bertie was
a score of 70 to 63, our loss.
Rocky Mount played Durham
Hillside for the second time on
January 4. The time Hillside
won with a score of 75 to 62. The
score may not have been very
close but Rocky Mount fought
hard. By halftime Rocky Mount
had brought a 16 point deficit to
within a point before Hillside
took it away at the end.
Coach Batts would like to give
recognition to several of his
The Girls Basketball Team
under Coach Judy Bradshaw
has had an excellent start this
year. So far the team has won
every game but two. Coach
Bradshaw says, “They are
aggressive on defense and have
good reboundings.” Among
their needed improvements she
adds are better shooting and
foul shots.
The team played Durham
Hillside and won 60 to 43.
In this game Rocky Mount led
during the whole game. At the
end of the first quarter the score
was 15 to 12. The half-time
score was 28 to 21. The game
ended with Jackie Costen’s
fourth period spurt as Rocky
Mount started off behind, but
by the third quarter they were
on top 15 to 8. After three
quarters they headed for the big
win 40 to 37.
The Durham Senior game
meant another great victory for
the girls. At halftime the girls
led with a big 8 point lead. By
fourth period they continued
their lead and outscored
Durham nicely at the end 47 to
32.
The next game with Bertie
was harder than the one before.
The score at halftime was close
23 and 19. At the third period
though they had a 20 to 9
stretch, which had Rocky Mount
a later 43 to 28 lead after three
quarters. The final score was 55
to 40.
West Edgecombe defeated
Rocky Mount in their game, a
score of 42-41.
The conference games began
on January 17. Rocky Mount
had a great defeat over Wilson,
the score 51 to 29. In the
halftime the Gryphons already
had a major lead of 24 to 11.
Wilson tried many defenses but
the Lady Gryphons blew the one

were already outscoring Green
ville 15 to 5. The final score was
a terrific win of 51 to 28.
The game with Northeastern
was a tough conference game.
The Eagles fast break was made
in the first quarter and nothing
could stop it. Even though the
Eagles were only two points
ahead of the Lady Gryphons, at
halftime, because of bad offense
Rocky Mount lost.
The game with Bertie was
another great win of 60-31.
Coach Bradshaw says there
is very close competition in the
conferences.

Cantrall, his best rebounder;
Linwood Silver, the best hustler;
and Anthony Pinkett as his most
improved player.
