To View Play On Saturday, Dec. 18, 1976, Rocky Mount Senior High Drama students, teachers, and members of the community visited Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. They viewed “Sleeping Beauty” by the American Ballet Theatre. The group traveled by bus, taking a bag lunch to eat on the way to Washington. After arriving at the Center, they toured the three theaters of Kennedy Center. They then went to view “The Sleeping Beauty” production. Several students commented on the impressiveness of the performance. Jackie Rowland said, “It captured everyone’s total attention. I was on the edge of my seat watching it.” Drake Mann felt that “the scenery was the most elaborate I had ever seen. It was ultimate, capital, stupendous.” It seemed as if all the people attending were very impressed. Joy Richardson commented, “It was wonderful, fascinating; some thing I had never seen before.” After the performance, the group left to return to Rocky Mount. They ate at McDonalds on the way home. Edgecombe Technical Insti tute has annoucned a new course in Nursing which will be available to interested students starting in September, 1977. This is a two-year (24 month) program which leads to an Associate Degree in Nursing. Credits from this course may be transferred into a four-year program leading to a B.S. degree. These hospitals are located in Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, and Halifax counties. Stipervised practice is given at all times for the nurses courscs in a laboratory situation. The starting salary for a Licensed Practical Nurse now ranges from S400 to $500 per month. The other nursing positions pay even more depending on the hospital one becomes affiliated with and the level of education achieved. Students Advised At Social Studies Emporium “The program was very worthwhile for the students and the teachers.” That comment came from Mr. Mike Brown, who with Mrs. Sarah Brown, supervised a group of students from Rocky Mount Senior High to a Social Studies Emposium at East Carolina University. The Program was held on December 16, 1976. The Program was divided into two sections. One section was devoted to the teachers, and the subject was; “The South; Past, Present and Future.” The “Past” part of the Emposium deals with how the South became a distinctive area, with its certain stereotypes. The “Present” section was present ed in a political point of view. It discussed where the South was politically and what its political future might be later. The “Future” of the South was discussed in a literary manner. Various types of literary materials were discussed in a way as to examine where the South is heading in the future. The teachers’ section of the Emposium was presented main ly by lectures by professors. For the students’ area of participation, an “acquaint ance” program was conducted. The students were acquainted with the curriculum of a social studies major and the pros and cons of being a social studies major. The students were helped by graduate students and professors. Mr. Brown pointed out, -“The students seemed to enjoy the program and most expressed a positive attitude toward the program.” Mr. Brown also indicated that there would probably be such a program next year and that he felt Senior High would participate.
