Thursday, February 10,1977 — THE GRYPHON — Page Seven Valentine’s Day Excites Characters Everywhere CHARLIE BUCK GIVES; Love struck Buck gives his heart to Stephanie Maryland. On February 14, students at Rocky Mount Senior High will be asking one another, “Will you be my Valentine?” What makes the day so special to people all over the world? Valentine’s Day is named for St. Valentine who was beheaded in Rome for aiding persecuted Christians. It was originally a celebration held by Romans who held a lover’s feast for their young people. After the spread of Christianity, Pope Gelasius changed the name of the festival to St. Valentine’s Day in an attempt to Christianize the pagan festival. Valentine’s Day first became popular in the United States at the time of the War Between the States. Most of the valentine cards of that time were hand printed and usually showed cupid whose arrows had pierced a heart. Many of the store bought cards cost $10, and young ladies kept the cards as keepsakes. Many valentine cards have become collector's items. On the more sinister side of St. Valentine’s Day, in 1929 the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre occurred in which seven gang sters were slaughtered by other gangsters in a continuing gangland war. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in various manners throughout the world. In Great Britain, children receive gifts of candy, fruits, and money, and they sing songs picked for the occasion. In Italy some areas hold feasts in honor of Valentine’s Day. Here in the United States, cards are exchanged and parties are held. Here at Rocky Mount Senior High, a box is placed in the lobby in which students may drop valentine cards. On Valentine’s Day or the school day closest to it, these cards are delivered to the receiver’s homeroom. Students taking foreign languages make valen tine cards written in the language which they are taking.
