Blacks Recall Past
The month of February was
designated as National Negro
History Month. The theme for
this month was: Heritage Day;
The Blaclc Perspective, 1977,
The Third Century.
The Human Relations Com
mittee at Rocky Mount Senior
High planned an assembly in
recognition of the many black
achievers. The assembly involv-'
ed a parade of Black Americans.
The committee tried to
portray people from all fields,
from slaves to scientists
showing how they related to the
history of America. They also
put up two bulletin boards and
sent to homerooms a two page
handout about black achievers
from slavery until the present
day. A few were Crispus
Atticus, the first person to die'
for his country during the
revolution, Thurgood Marshall,
who became the first black
Supreme Court Justice, and
Robert Warner, the first black
American to serve in the
Presidential Cabinet who was
named head of the department
of Housing and Urban Develop
ment in 1966.
During the assembly several
poems by poets such as Phyllys
Wheatley and Gewendolyn
Brooks were read to the
accomplishment of music by
Roberta Flack. She was
portrayed by Phyllis Tillery who
sang a portion of “Killing Me
Softly.”
The committee also recogniz
ed several outstanding Ameri
cans in the city of Rocky Mount.
Among these were Esmeralda
Hawkins, who is the president
