[Photo by Buliuck] Blacks Recall Past The month of February was designated as National Negro History Month. The theme for this month was: Heritage Day; The Blaclc Perspective, 1977, The Third Century. The Human Relations Com mittee at Rocky Mount Senior High planned an assembly in recognition of the many black achievers. The assembly involv-' ed a parade of Black Americans. The committee tried to portray people from all fields, from slaves to scientists showing how they related to the history of America. They also put up two bulletin boards and sent to homerooms a two page handout about black achievers from slavery until the present day. A few were Crispus Atticus, the first person to die' for his country during the revolution, Thurgood Marshall, who became the first black Supreme Court Justice, and Robert Warner, the first black American to serve in the Presidential Cabinet who was named head of the department of Housing and Urban Develop ment in 1966. During the assembly several poems by poets such as Phyllys Wheatley and Gewendolyn Brooks were read to the accomplishment of music by Roberta Flack. She was portrayed by Phyllis Tillery who sang a portion of “Killing Me Softly.” The committee also recogniz ed several outstanding Ameri cans in the city of Rocky Mount. Among these were Esmeralda Hawkins, who is the president of the NAACP, and Buck Leonard, who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall Of’ Fame. The Fine Arts Festival sponsored by The Junior Woman’s Club was recently entered by a number of Rocky Mount Senior High students. An overwhelming number of the students came out on top in their own individual work. In all there were 54 entries. The first place winners from Senior High are as follows: James Bynum, Martha Bras well, Jan Pridgen, Gina Diehl, Teena Joyner, Terry Conner, Babs Brown, Michael Byrg, Johanna Lancaster, Joel Mel vin, Richard Oxedine, Jeff Bachelor, and Kim Byrd. In Drama James Bynum came in first, Karen Dudley second, and Gina Diehl third. In Arts Martha Braswell won first in her oil work, and Edward Pickett came in second. In Pen and Ink Jan Pridgen came in first and Kelley Bullard second. Teena Joyner won first in Jier Mixed Media while Terri Berry came in second and James Wright third. Terry Conner won first in piano, and Nancy Davis came in second. For the 12th grade Amy Rodwell came in first and Amy Fisher second. Gina Diehl won first in Pencil, and James Wright came in third. In Voice Dale Beavens won first and Rhonda Lancaster second in Female Vocal. In poems Babs Brown won first while Kaye Batts came in second, and Cindy Tew third. Michael Byrd came in first for his age level in the Mixed Media. Kelley Bullard placed second in Mixed Media. Johanna Lancaster won first in sewing. Joel Melvin came in first and second in his Charcoal work. Richard Oxedine won first in Pen and Ink. Terri Berry came in second. Tenna Joyner won first in Sculpture. Kim Byrd won first in Graphics. Jeff Batchelor came in first in Pencil, Marty Everette second, and Edward Pickett third. Richard Oxedine and Jeff Batchelor were the best in the show for their ages. Elisa Celebrates The birthday for Elisa Gonzolas, American Field Serv ice student from Costa Rica, was held February 10 at the home of Lynn Vaughan, a sophomore. The party was planned as a surprise by the American Field Service Committee. The cele bration began when Elisa arrived amidst shouts of “surprise” and “Happy Birth day.” A white birthday cake topped with green candy flowers were served with ice cream and Coca-Cola. Elisa then opened her gifts a few of which were a dogwood pin, necklace, statio nery, a stuffed animal, and a bracelets. Jenny Monroe, Gina Diehl, Michael Janelle, Drew Peter son, Audrey Cooper, Travis and Susan Cobb, Cindy Gurganus, Natasha Matkin, Paul May berry, Joseph Williams, Denise was a very big surprise. I was so Alston, Angela Winston, Court- happy. I enjoyed myself among ney Sazama, Barbara Wujciak, so many friends who also had a Kevin Beairsto, and Mrs. Jackie good time. The Vaughan family Heston attended the party. The was so nice, and the cake was guests enjoyed listening to beautiful. I appreciate the gifts records, dancing, playing pool, very much. I am very grateful and talking with Elisa. The festivities ended at 9:30. Elisa exclaimed later that, “It i for the good time and the happiness that they all gave Elisa Gonzolas celebrates...Elisa, the APS student is all smiles after her big birthday celebration.
