Water Causes Problem
The highlight of this year’s
baseball season should be the
spring baseball tournament,
which is sponsored by the
Breakfast Optimist Club.
The tournament will be held
at Tlocky Mount Municipal
Stadium Saturday, April 9;
Monday, April 11, and Tuesday,
April 12. Rocky Mount will be
the host team. Eight teams are
involved in this the first Break
fast Optimist Invitational
Baseball Tournament.
The tournament is set up with
a winner’s bracket and a loser’s
bracket. First round games
included: Sanders vs North
ern Nash at 11:00, Rocky
Mount vs Garner at 2:00,
Rocky Mount Senior High
may have fielded its best track
team in years this year.
Although the team has had its
stand-outs in years past, it has
had only a few participants;
whereas, this year’s team has
many people on it. The many
participants on the team may
give the Gryphons an edge. The
quality of this year’s team
deserves a better track to run
on.
Recently the track at Senior
High was repaved. The con
tractors who covered the track
promised that the track was an
all-weather track. However,
this promise did not hold water.
Some of the people who run
track commented that it is a
good one to run on. But there is
one problem with it. Almost
everytime there is a hard rain,
the water stands on the all-
weather surface. There appears
to be a slight problem with
drainage on the track surface.
Water on the track presents a
problem for anyone running on
it. Running through water is not
at all comfortable and can ruin
some shoes. If a participant
runs through the puddle at
practice, it can slow him down
or cause him to slip and fall and
injure himself. Not only
students use the track at school.
Many adults use the track to jog
on and keep in shape.
Surely something can be done
about the drainage problem of
the track. Perhaps the school
should call on the contractor to
resurface the track since the
first surface is obviously not all-
weather, School officials should
not allow the track team to turn
into a swim team.
