Customs Discussed In Classes
Nine students from Rocky
Mount Senior High School were
awarded certificates for placing
in the recent District Junior
Woman’s Club Fine Arts
Festival. Awarded first place
certificates and advancing to the
State competition were: Terri
Berry, textile craft; Richard
Oxendine, metal craft; Amy
Rodwell, piano; and Angela
Ryals, literature.
Receiving second place cer
tificates were; Johanna Lancas
ter, sewing; and Teena Joyner,
visual art sculpture.
Third place recipients were:
Dale Beavans, music; Babs
Brown, literature; Richard
Oxendine, visual art painting,
and James Bynum, drama.
Junior Woman’s Club mem
ber, Dee Threatt thought that it
was a very interesting conven
tion. She said, “1 would’ve
hated to have been a judge. All
the work was so good.”

Caroline Kilpatrick’s name was
omitted from the list of local
winners in the last issue.
Caroline won first place in
Crayon Resist, and second place
in Water Color.
On Thursday, Mar. 17, Mr.
Vann Cutts’ history classes had
an unusual speaker from Ghana,
Africa.' Mr. S.amuer Darko
Hammond, a student from
Africa who is studying in
America, spoke to the classes
about his country and answered
the many curious questions that
the students asked. Among the
information discussed by Mr.
Hammond was marriage in
Africa. Mr. Hammond said that
the Christians in Africa had only
one wife. “The moslems don’t
believe in divorce,” said Mr.
Hammond, “but if a married
man is caught playing around
with another woman, he must
bring her to his wife or he will
be in big trouble.”
The students seemed particu
larly interested in the question if
there were any manhood tests.
In Mr. Hammond’s tribe there
were no such tests, but in
another tribe there was a deer
hunting festival that could
possibly be called a manhood
test.
Mr. Hammond said the
people in Africa enjoy soccer as
the main sport but basketball,
ping-pong, and volleyball were
enjoyed too.
In closing Mr. Hammond said
that the Americans are the most
hospitable people he knows.
Delegates Attend Convention
The Edenton-Chowan Student
Councils Association in Edenton
hosted the Eastern District
Student Councils Convention on
March 19 and 20. Official
delegates from Rocky Mount
Senior High were Tony Williams
from the sophomores class;
Emerson Harrison from the
Junior Class, and Joseph
Williams from the Senior Class.
Unofficial delegates were Terry
Berry and Angela Winston. Also
Paul Mayberry attended as a
discussion leader, Kaye Batts as
secretary of the convention, and
Miss Kate P. Kitchin as the
