The Opening and second Speech Jimmy in a Pierce Wins Match "Rook” is the name we give to a beginner in anything; as well as the name of a playing piece in the game of chess. But as far as Brooks Pierce is concerned, these two analogies hardly go hand in hand, for Brooks has been playing chess for eight years and has numerous awards to prove his ability. Brooks Pierce, a sophomore, has been playing chess since he was eight years old. He has won three or four trophies and about S50 in prize money, as well as participating in 15 to 20 chess tournaments in North Carolina. The weekend of April 3 and 4 he entered one such tournament. Brooks was one of 60 contestants competing for top positions in a tournament in Henderson. At the conclusion of 12 and one-half hours of playing he was awarded third place and a trophy. Brooks entered inde pendently but added that he “would like to see a chess club at Senior High.” ‘‘I’m a nervous type player at the board, I’m always fidgeting and walking around while my opponent is trying to plan his next move,” says Brooks, “I don’t have any stringent goals, but by the time I get to college I would like to be among the top players in North Carolina.” r ^^eanaU CM ^nc. ikx:ky moukt. north carouna Three members of tlie Senior High Distributive Education Clubs of America Chapter are making plans to attend the National DECA Convention to be held in Anahiem, California.
