Club Appoints Couple “1 was a little shocked and a little rushed,” commented senior Curt Todd concerning his being chosen as part of the Rotary Couple for April. “They told me that I had been chosen about an hour before the banquet.” Other than being rushed to banquets, Curt is constant ly on the move at Bonanza, where he is a supervisor. Curt devotes some of his free time to coin collecting. Linda Conyers, the other half of the Rotary Couple, concurred, ‘‘1 was also somewhat shocked when they told me about being chosen.” This reporter tends to doubt that the shock lasted long or that it in any way disoriented Linda’s thinking, for she speaks with a certain realism that denotes clear- thinking, no matter what the situation. CURTfS TODD PARTICIPATES: Curt is kept busy at school with his duties as Hinocar Circulation Manager and homeroom president. LINDA CONYERS PARTICIPATES: Linda, somewhat service minded, is treasurer of her homeroom and is a member of the Good Sports Club. The honorable Judge Perry Martin presided over the court session. The first case was marijuana possession. The young man was charged with possession of 120 grams of pot. The judge fined the man and put him on probation. The next case heard was a man who was charged with driving under the influence. The man charged pleaded not guilty, so a jury had to be selected. Each perspective juror was asked a few questions by each lawyer. Steve Cedarberg said he felt this was a slow way to select the jury. The District Attorney was the first to call witnesses. The arresting officer was called and answered some questions for the state. The defense attorney wasw allowed to cross examine the officer. The manner in which the attorney asked the questions and the questions asked drew some snickers from the students. Tony Butler said that he felt that some of the questions were dumb and absurd. During the lunch break the two attorneys did some plea-bargaining, and when court resumed after lunch, the defendent pleaded guilty to driving on the wrong side of the road. At lunch time Judge Martin talked with the students about the court systems in North Carolina. Mahler Thorpe asked the Judge why he had only fined the man charged with possess ion of marijuana. Judge Martin said that the marijuana laws were under attack and that people had many different opinions about marijuana. The Judge went on to say that regardless of the way he felt about marijuana the law still said it was illegal, so all he did was fine anyone charged with possession of marijuana, but he always sent anyone to jail who was charged with selling marijuana. After hearing one more case, the classes were excused from court, and they returned to Rocky Mount. Linguists Attend Festival All of the Biology students at Rocky Mount Senior High School have been or are going on the annual Ecology Field Trip held at the LC. Lamm Farm.
