May 12.1977 —THE GRYPHON — Page Five Food Prices Soar A “market survey” of grocery stores in Rocky Mount was con ducted by the third and fifth period Economics classes during the week of April 7-13. Prices were computed by the students in a price index table. These statistics show the rising inflation, which is a condition of significantly rising prices of 5% or more a year. The Economics 1 and II students were interested in the effects of inflation in the.Rocky Mount area. Approximately 20 grocery stores were surveyed. The price index measured the consumers’ ability to buy. The given year price (1977) is divided by the base price (1971) and multiplied by 100. The value for the base year is always inter preted as 100. Mrs. Bone, a chemistry teacher, qualified as teacher of the year by a faculty vote. To enter the city competition she had to complete a form stating a biographical sketch, her reasons for becoming a teacher, her teaching philosophy, her profes sional activities, and her civil services. A Johnston County native who played on the state East basketball team her senior year, as well as being involved in the band, the Beta Club, and student government, Mrs. Bone married Roger Bone of Nash County in 1964. They have one son, Frederick, who is eight years old. After having originally plan ned to be a medical technologist Mrs. Bone gradually decided to become a teacher because of her love of students and her experiences as a student teacher. "I believe that it is the responsibility of the school to promote the total learning process. It is important that we realize that education is not an end in itself but that it is the commencement of a lifetime of learning,” Mrs. Bone stated as her teaching philosophy. Senior High Pupil Given Scholarship Danny Claytor, a graduating senior at Rocky Mount Senior High, has been awarded a scholarship valued at $500 per year to attend the University of Dallas in Texas. "I was really surprised and honored to receive the scholar ship. The University of Dallas is a very demanding school, and I am looking forward to the challenge it will present.” This was Danny’s response to a question about his feelings toward the scholarship and the University of Dallas. Danny first became interested in the scholarship through a letter he received from the University of Dallas. The letter asked Danny if he would be interested in taking a test to ascertain if he could qualify for a scholarship. Danny wrote back requesting the test which he took a couple of weeks later in the Guidance Office. After sending back the test, Danny was notified of his award. Mrs. Bone, an active Jay- cette, has served as State President of North Carolina Jaycettes and as National^ Committee Chairman of Internal Affairs of the United States Jaycettes along with local positions. In 1975 she was named one of the Five Outstanding Women in North Carolina. Danny Claytor The University of Dallas is a four-year Catholic University for men and women located in Irving, Texas. One particularly attractive feature about U.D. which Danny likes is the fact that the university is smaller than Rocky Mount Senior with less than 1,000 undergraduates. * to:: Mrs. Reba Bone 7^ Knjo\- Coca-Cola.
