The Rocky Mount Reservoir offers great opportunities for those who ski, swim, picnic, fish and play. The Reservoir is large enough to “get away” in a small fishing cove or ski in the wide open space. [Photos by Bulluck] Reservoir Activities Various summer activities for teenagers can be found at the Tar River Reservoir. Among these activities are swimming, fishing, skiing, sailing, pic nicking, and sun bathing. In certain parts of the reservoir, skiing is allowed. For those students not fortunate enough to have a power boat, the Tar River Ski Club will conduct clinics teaching begin- ing skiing, saloming, and trick skiing all for a nominal fee. The clinic is well worth the money as the instructors take great pains to make sure that everybody has a chance to learn and enjoy themselves. Dates for the clinics have not been set up yet but may be found in the future in The Rocky Mount Evening Telegram. Various parts of the reservoir are reserved for sailing and swimming. The banks offer excellent picnic facilities, and students can find a place on the banks for sun bathing or other activities. Summer is almost upon us. Rocky Mount is surrounded with a variety of vacationing areas. Listed below are a few summer possibilities; Visit a world of family entertainment: take a trip to King’s Dominion. Fabulous rides, shows starring happy cartoon characters and a multitude of wild animals await you. King’s Dominion is in Virginia. It is a 60-million dollar fantasyland. The best part of the deal is that you can ride each of their 33 rides as often as you like for just one admission price. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and $8.50 covers it all. If you thought Carowinds was something special last year, wait until you see it this year. It’s something else all over again! The Family Entertain ment Capital of the Carolinas gets a new twist — when White Lightning comes to Carowinds. This ride catapults you out like a shot iip through a 76-foot vertical loop then wham! back through it all again at break-neck speed. When the sun goes down, the stars come out again at the 7.500 seat Pala- dium. Here are just a few of the groups that may be entertaining at the Paladium: Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, July 5, 6, 7 Charlie Daniels Band and Sea Level, July 8, 9, 10 Captain and Tennile, July 16 Kris Kristofferson, August 20, 21 Come to Carowinds for a weekend of fun, located on the border of North and South Carolina on 1-77. Just five minutes from Williamsburg, Va., you can see the Europe you’ve dreamed about. The place is called Busch Gardens — The Old Country, and it’s the closet thing to Europe on this side of the Atlantic. You can see bobbies and beefeaters; cobblestones and castle courtyards; Oompah music and dozens of dazzling rides including two roller coasters. Busch Gardens is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and one admission ticket lasts all day. Finally for all those ‘beach lovers’ there’s Morehead City in North Carolina and Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. Morehead City includes a variety of activities. The “Big Rock” Marlin Tournament draws sportsmen around the world each summer. Fort Macon State Park Beach is a convenient picnic area with bath houses, snack bars and lifeguards. Plus Morehead City has various nightly entertainment such as discos and movie theaters. Myrtle Beach on the Grand Strand is one of the nation’s most outstanding resorts. There are numerous ocean-front mo tels and hotels and various cottages for rent. The Sun Fun Festival officially opens the summer season at Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand. Beauty contests and surfing contests are just a few of the many amusements for the young and old. Everything is in full, swing throughout the summer. Summer Blasts Many of you enjoy the summer months but need a little assistance with some outdoor sports. Rocky Mount’s YMCA and city recreational depart ment offer programs to accom modate you. To begin the summer, the “Y” will offer a women’s exercise course for ladies 16 and older. After a shape up session, one may want to take swimming lessons. These lessons will cost from SI2 to $15; the price is undetermined as of now. The city recreational depart ment also offers swimming lessons. Tennis instructions will begin around May 23. The cost will only be $1 for an entire week. Adult softball and programs at the Art Center and Museum are underway. For further information contact the YMCA or City Hall.
