C. 27801 Vol. 4, No. 5 December 2, 1977 1 iy • V ^ Mrs. Edythe Tweedy Photo by Jerry Joyner Tweedy Honored The award for the Outstand ing Secondary Counselor was presented to Mrs. Edythe Tweedy at the fall conference of the North Carolina School Counselors Association held November 10-11 at the Hilton Inn in Burlington, N. C. Awards were presented to the outstanding counselors in the elementary, middle, junior and senior high levels along with the administrator and legislator of the year awards. The conference was designed to give counselors across the state the opportunity to hear keynote speaker Dr. Jack A. Uuncan, Counselor Educator ot the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. The counselors attended work shops related to current prac tices and up dated their infor mation and skills on such topics as: Public Relations, Compe tency Based testing. Licensure, Career Development and Child Abuse. The conference is one of the services provided by the North Carolina School Counselor As sociation, a Division of the American School Counselor As sociation and the American Personnel and Guidance Asso ciation. Stondords Board Meets “Reviewing the present poli cy concerning promotion and retention and seeing how grad ing and placement affects these is the purpose of the Committee on Grading,” commented Mrs. Raymond Doyle, Rocky Mount City School Board member. The Rocky Mount City School Board recently set up this committee to look into the problem of promotion and re tention. “The committee is to determine whether the present policy is satisfactory or not. If not, the committee will recom mend a new policy by spring so the school board can approve it for next year,” said Mrs. Doyle. At this time, only one meet ing has been held. At the meeting, members discussed promotion primarily in the low er grades according to Mrs. Doyle. Three school board members; three members from the central office; three princi pals; and three teachers make up the committee. Members include: Mrs. Raymond Doyle; Mrs. Fred Payne; Mr. R. D. Armstrong; Mr. Roscoe Batts; Mrs. Katherine Collins; Mrs. Jeannette Pittman, Mr. Elton Newbern, Mr. Doug Watts, Mr. Richard Hicks, Mr. Jim Wright, Mrs. Retha Arnette, Mrs. Flo- rine Joyner, Mrs. Barbara Tay lor, Mrs. Cleo Corbett and Miss Ginger Murray. “In my opinion, we are to decide why students at the senior high level aren’t reading on a senior high level. We want to make certain our students can pass the state competency test," stated Mrs. Taylor, a member of the committee. SRA Announces Magazine Sales In the recent magazines sales, the 83 leaders of this Student Government sold 152 subscriptions for a total of $1313.31. This figure would average to 1.8 subscriptions and $15.82 per person if each person had contributed; how ever, only 47 people, or 57 per cent of the officers, committee chairmen, and representatives sold even one subscription. Of the four Student Organi zation Officers, President Che ryl Bryant sold two subscrip tions for $19.00, Secretary Te resa Everette sold two subs criptions for $19.00, and Trea surer Bruce Hayden sold two subscriptions for $10.94. Vice President Stephen Phillips sold none. Dee Whitley, Junior Class President led the class presi dents by selling three for $38.94. Holly Kelly, Sophomore President sold one for $13.56, and Senior President Steve Dickens sold none. Fourteen of the nineteen committee chairmen sold at least one magazine. Hope Reese, chairman of the School Spirit committee led the cabi net by selling 17 subscriptions totalling $156.72. Karl Best- wick. House and Grounds Co- chairman followed with six for $48.60. Gloria Pittman, Fire Drill Co-chairman; Jan Prid gen, House and Grounds Co- chairman; and Audrey Cooper, Publications Chairman; each sold four subscriptions totalling $46.00, $37.31 and $34.51 res pectively. Sheri Vines, Publicity Co- chairman, sold three for $19.00. Mark Pearsall, Fire Drill co- chairman; Beth Hutchisson, American Field Service Chair man; Drew Peterson, Human Relations Co-chairman; Steve Ratchford, Publicity Co-chair man; Kaye Batts, Elections Co- chairman each sold two maga zines for $24.45, $18.63, $18.44, $15.76, and $14.81 respectively. Toni Williams, Human Re lations Co-chairman, and Toni LaGrange, Student Store Chairman sold one subscription a piece for $12.00 and $6.99. Janet Kitts, Social Committee Co-chairman; Starletta Wig gins, Lost and Found Chair man; Kevin Beairsto and Chris Howell, Traffic Co-chairmen; and Clarence Wiggins, Elect ions Co-chairman sold none. Six Sophomore SRA repre sentatives sold 24 magazine subscriptions. Angela Boone sold 11 for $70.71. Jonathan Davis sold four totalling $30.36. Connie Hinnant and Mary Bul- luck each sold three totalling $29.50 and $16.87. Chuck Har vey sold two subscriptions for $14.81 and George Booth sold one at $6.98. Twelve Junior SRA memb ers sold 32 subscriptions adding $261.74 to the total amount collected. Chris Tant sold seven for $57.24. Denise Enderly fol lowed with four subscriptions for $30.49. Marion Blackburn also sold four at $22.88. Kate Pierce, Beth Berry and Marsha Thompson each sold three ma gazines totalling $30.49, $26.98 and $19.97 respectively. Susan Bandy and Karen Ver non each sold two for $17.00 and $14.95. Kathy Callahan and Melinda Stone each sold one for $15.56 a piece, and Cynthia Lloyd and Erica Byrd sold one a piece at $7.81 and $7.00. Ten Senior SRA representa tives sold magazines. Jeff Hol loman sold 15 for $135.33. Karen Dudley and Terrie Con ner each sold five for $88.00 and $36.92 respectively. The re maining seven each sold one: Delores Cooley, $13.56; Debra Henderson, $12.00; Amy Smith, $10.00; Pat Warren, $4.98; Rhonda Marrow, $4.97; Rhonda Bridge, $4.95; and Michael Mar tin, $4.00. National Honor Society Accepts New Members November 29.
