- the Gryphon, Friday, April 17, i981 - Disc jockeys ride airwave By TOMMY O’CONNELL They are cheerful in the bleak hours of dawn. They can motivate people to wake up and face the day. These amaz ing men are morning disco jockeys. AUn Handelmu Alan Handelman of WITN- FM has one of the few live pro grams on the automated “Rock 93.” Although it is a relatively new program, his morning show, along with his Sunday night program, has gained a large following among Eastern Carolina's young adults. "I like Handelman because he’s the only D. J. who will play real rock ’n‘ roll. The others play too much pop,” said junior Bobby Rosenbloom. Bob Inskeep Another very popular an nouncer is WRAL-FM’s Bob Inskeep. In the past few years, Mr. Inskeep has built one of the largest followings in North Carolina. He plays mainstream pop- rock and usually all records in the “Top 20.” Between songs he mixes humor by utilizing puppets and other such materials. “He plays a variety of music from the early 70’s up through today’s music,” said junior Judi Thomas. Milton Garrett WRSV’s morning man is Milton Garrett. Mr. Garrett has become very popular dur ing his stay at “Soul 92.” He plays popular music by such groups as Yarbourough & Peoples, the Gap Band, the Sugerhill Gang and a Taste of Honey. His format is well liked by many students. “I like his music, and it wakes me up in the morning,” said senior Pete Thorne. Scott Marshall Radio station WEED’S Scott Marshall’s selection of music is basically mainstream rock. Music is but a small portion of Mr. Marshall’s show. He adds dry humor and a comic banter with newsman Butch Pendell to a good selection of music. Gongaware Following in the footsteps of a radio celebrity is tough, but WQDR’s Gongaware has done an admirable job in replacing Pat Patterson who left the sta tion for WKIX-AM. “I think he’s kind of funny, and he’s pretty easy to wake up to,” said junior Terri Spears. Bob Crews Although much of his sup port comes from older listeners, Bob Crews of WFMA-FM (‘‘Country Lovin’ ”) also has high school support. WFMA’s format is entirely country music with the popular talk show “Party Line.” “Mr. Crews’ music selection is interesting, and his ap proach is really unique,” said junior Kelly Mouzon. 1 Morning disc jockey Michael Paul of WRMT (top), and WRSV’s Milton Garrett on the job. Beach music ' here By MIKE BARNHILL Rocky Mount is not famous for strong winds, but its “Breeze” has blown right into the limelight. “Breeze,” whose debut oc curred last July Fourth at Zol- ly’s Disco, is fast becortiing one of Eastern North Carolina’s favorite Beach Music bands. Lead guitarist “Spook” Joyner, is pleasantly surprised with the group’s success. “We started out slow, but we just kept on rolling,” he said. Other members of “Breeze” include bass guitarist Ed Weaver, lead vocalists Gordon Springs and Bobby Bruce, Steve Potter on the keyboards and David Thompson on the drums. “Breeze” writes most of their own music, sometimes with the help of friend Dink Perry. They have another 45 due out in about six months, and they will be performing at the Rocky Mount Fairgrounds May 2 with the Embers, the Catalinas and other popular Beach Music groups. But now he feels pretty solid with “Breeze.” “Spook” sug gests that the high school musician “take music, learn to read it, take it seriously, and practice moderately.” All the members of “Breeze” are in their twenties and are from the Rocky Mount area. / Breeze, a local beach music band, are David keyboards, Eddie Weaver on bass and Preston Thompson on drums, Gordon Spring on vocals, (Spook) Joyner on guitar.
