A Moment by Moment Look at September 11, 2001 and the Days that Followed
September 11,2001
8:45 am- American Airlines flight 11, hijacked
en route from Boston to Los Angeles, with 92
passengers aboard, crashes into the north
tower of the World Trade Center
8:50 am- Hijacked United Airlines flight 175,
with 66 passengers aboard, crashes into the
south tower of the World Trade Center
9:05 am - President Bush is reading to elemen
tary school students in Florida, and is
interrupted to be told of the brutal terrorist
attacks on New York
9:30 am - President Bush addresses the
people of Sarasota, Florida, and calls the
crashes “an apparent terrorist attack.”
10:00 am- The south tower of the WTC, the
second tower hit by the rogue planes, topples
to the sidewalk.. .and in Somerset County,
Pennsylvania, another hijacked plane crashes,
supposedly en route to Camp David or
Andrews Air Force Base
10:15 am - American Airlines Flight 77,
hijacked en route from Washington to Los
Angeles, crashes near the newly renovated
south side of the Pentagon in Washington,
DC.; nonessential personnel in the Federal
Building, White House, Capitol, and United
Nations evacuated
10:22 am- The State and Justice Departments,
as well as the World Bank, are evacuated
10:26 am- The north tower, hit by the first
plane, falls to the sidewalk of New York
10:30 am- The FAA grounds all flights in
American airways and diverts incoming
international flights to other countries
10:38 am - Another explosion rocks the
already-devastated World Trade Center
1:08 pm- President Bush addresses the
nation, vowing revenge on those who
attacked our nation
2:15 pm- NC Governor Mike Basely spoke to
the State and said that North Carolina was in
“no creditable danger.”
2:51 pm- The US Navy sends missile destroy
ers, along with other equipment, to defend the
waterways of Washington, DC and New York
City
4:08 pm - Several US embassies located in
Afghanistan close indefinitely
5:25 pm- Seventh building of the World
Trade Center, a building already rocked from
the nearby terrorist attacks, collapses
6:40 pm- President Bush returns to the White
House, preparing to address the nation
6:05 pm- Bomb and missile showers rain down
on Kabul, Afganistan. The United States
denies claims to the attack.
6:59pm- Reports show that knives and box
cutters were used in the hijacking. Some
reports also stated that the flight attendants
were injured or possibly murdered by the
terrorist.
7:21pm- Cox Cable in Rocky Mount has 29
channels showing the news coverage. Two
had no programing to honor those lost.
7:30 pm - People on Capitol Hill begin sponta
neously singing along to “God Bless
America”; MSNBC first reports that approxi
mately 200 fire fighters dead or missing
8:30 pm- President Bush addresses the nation
9:00 pm- Night falls on the nation as Manhat
tan smolders in the wake of this terrible
tragedy
Wednesday, September 12,2001
The Day After
5:30 am- Osama bin Laden denies connection
with the terrorist attacks, but admits that he is
pleased
6:00 am- Six fire fighters and an policeman are
pulled from the carnage at the World Trade
Center, said to be badly burned
11:00 am- President Bush once again ad
dresses the nation, calling the attacks an “act
of war”
12:00 pm - FAA keeps airports closed past
noon in order to put heavier security mea
sures in place
12:09 pm- The Pentagon is temporarily
evacuated, and fires continue to bum in the
wreckage
2:00 pm- Although rescue efforts have
continued all night, no more are expected to
be found alive at the Pentagon. Some esti
mates show anywhere from 100 to 800 bodies
lay buried in the wreckage. 259 firemen and
policemen are still missing from the World
Trade Center complex, most of them last seen
before the towers began to collapse.
Thousands are buried in the rubble of two of
the tallest buildings in the United States.
October 7,2001
12:45pm- News reports tell us that Allied
Forces are attacking Afganistan as the first
military attacks in the war on terror.
November 2, 2001
Several fire fighters on the recovery team at
Ground Zero are arrested for a minor riot after
plans of scaling back recovery efforts were
passed. These charges were later dropped.
November 11, 2001
The two month anniversary occurs. Fire
fighters and other volunteers at Ground Zero
pause to honor those lost in a moment of
silence.
November 12, 2001
American Airlines Flight 587 crashes in
Queens, NY after 5 minutes of flight. The
plane was headed to the Dominican Republic
from JFK Airport. 255 passengers and crew
were killed, and 5 people on the ground are
missing.
November 29,2001
Taliban militias and leaders have been driven
out of most of northern Afghanistan. The
Northern Alliance Forces have taken over.
Even though the Taliban is leaving, the war is
far from over; Marines are looking for Bin
Laden. Also, the first US combat death
occurred.
