News and mion Cost to park increases Every student looks forward to getting their license and parking in the school parking lot with all their friends, but is the rising cost of the parking passes really worth your money? Rocky Mount Senior High is charging twenty-five dollars for a guaranteed parking space in the student parking lot. The price has risen dramatically since 1981, when it was fifty cents to park. You also have a second choice this year. You can pay fifteen dollars for a parking space that is not guaranteed. Yes, that’s right; you pay fifteen dollars and you may never be able to park in the parking lot! It is outrageous! When asked how the parking money was used, assistant principle Linwood Weeks replied, “Any money obtained by the students is used for the students. When pressed for specific uses, Mr. Weeks was unable to respond Mandy Smith Dress code enforced Serena Arrington immediately. After being given time to check the records, he provided a list of uses. Some of the uses, such as helping underpriviliged students defray some expenses which occured during last school year, are commendable and the administration should be applauded. Other uses mentioned, like paying for the bus for the Senior Trip to Kings Dominion, are questionable, especially when some teachers were unable to take educational field trips because of the cost of the bus. Most students have part-time jobs and only make so much money. We should not have to spend so much of our hard- earned money just to be able to park in the parking lot. If the school would make the price reasonable I’m sure no one would have a problem paying the money. Many students have started parking on the streets surrounding the school due to the outrageous parking price. The parking lot sure is looking empty this year. I wonder why. What do students think about the school dress code? Students are expected to dress appropriately at school at all times, but some of them wanted to express their opinion on the issue. Many giris do not think the dress code has changed. They think that it is unfair. It discriminates against full figured girls, and that it has more regulations for girls than the boys. Net shirts, tank tops, short shorts, bare midriffs, or other revealing apparel are not allowed. Also, clothes that suggest several obscene or racial symbols or messages are not acceptable. Giris are being sent home for their bare midriffs, short clothing, and revealing attire. Sometimes, it is unfair because some clothes that smaller girls wear, bigger girls can not wear. On the other hand, the boys are not worried about the dress code. They feel as if most of the rules pertain to the girls anyway Some feel that the dress code is reasonable, thinking in the way of not being too strict or too lenient. Messages, signs, or symbols promoting alcoholic beverages or drug abuse are not tolerated. Another rule involves hats; caps, headscarves, headbands, bandannas, and sunglasses are not to be worn in the building. The dress code is structured to give students the freedom to wear what they want, but at the same time look presentable. Students still do not abide by the dress code, even now that it has become more strictly enforced. They should be happy, though, because it could be worse. They could be wearing uniforms.
