Miss Peebles has invited the members of her second period Advanced Bible Class to spend two weeks with her in July. They are to go to her home in Raleigh the third week in July for a whole week of rest and fun. A special bus has been ordered and fares of the students are to be paid by the board of trustees and the faculty of Albemarle High School. Following the week of rest and recreation in Raleigh, Miss Peebles will take her guests to camp at Ridgecrest for another week of fun. Miss Peebles is paying the students’ expenses while they are !at Ridgecrest. Horace Springer, Gerald Rum mage, and James Haire have been appointed chaperons for both weeks. Florence Williams has off ered her services as assistant cook to Miss Peebles, since two of the group must cook while at Ridge crest. Arrangements have already been made for the cabin, which is located on the top of Lookout Mountain. Biology Class Has Brighter Future Students of the first, second, third, and fifth biology classes will have smooth sailing from here out. Miss Gilchrist stated today that she intended to change her method of conducting her biology classes. She said that instead of the usual procedure of taking notes on a problem and then having a test on the work done, she will have nothing but lectures and class dis cussion. Miss Gilchrist stated that she was doing this to benefit her many students like Monk McLain, Bill Bremer, Oscar Lackey, Harry Hun- sucker, and Butter Furr, who show so much enthusiasm in their work that she is afraid that they are overworking. She said that in her old age she doesn’t want it bearing on her conscience that she might have been responsible for the ill health and unhappiness of such conscien- tions students. A .v.hoe shine service is being con ducted by Hoover Morgan and Bobby Burleson in Mr. Grigg’s out er office each day between third and fourth periods. - Special Drivers Have Been Selected For Buses; Miss Kirby to Chaperone; Return for Commencement Planned News Briefs The second period study hall students and fourth period U. S. History students pooled their pen nies willingly and bought a can of oil for Willis Pence’s and Kent Outlaw’s shoes. Mr. Hatley has consented to sit in on the funny book class and explain anything incomprehensible to any student. Classes on “How to Drive” are being taught on the football field at activity period by Geraldine Boone, Jane Morton, Frances Biles, and Dorothy Swaringen. Anyone wishing to enroll will please see Truett Eudy, supervisor. A movie, “The Invention of the Homework Getter-Upper,” will be shown in the auditorium Friday. Student, Teacher Go to Hollywood Because of their outstanding performance in the play, “What A Life,” Helen Brown and Donald McLain have been given an eigh teen-year contract with Warner Brothers in Hollywood. A scout from Warner Bros, stu dio was making a tour of all high schools trying to find two high school students^ to play the leading role in a new comedy, “High School Puppy Love.” The scout realized that the suc cess of the play did not depend on the acting but also on the direct ing. Miss Taylor, who is known throughout the state for her di recting abilty, has also chosen to work with Warner Bros, and her first job will be to direct this new comedy. Plans have been made for them to leave on April 1. A special plane will carry them to Holly wood, where they will be given a formal reception by the studio. Due to the good training by Miss Taylor, it will not be necessary for Helen or Donald to attend a dramatics school. Work on the picture will begin immediately after their arrival, because this is expected to be the greatest hit of 1945. Thousands of tickets have already been sold. The senior class, due to an ex cellent record in scholarship this year, is to be permitted a tour of the U. S. A. from the first of April until the first of June. This trip will include visits to various historical spots all over the U. S. A. Since the war is on and such a large part of the population is in foreign countries and transpor tation facilities are no longer crowded, the chaperone. Miss Kirby, has chartered five buses which will be driven by five expert drivers noted for their carefulness. Lewis Morton, who is to lead the caravan, is to drive bus 1; Don Hill, bus 2; Gene Moore, bus 3; Theresa Page, bus 4; and Rose mary Borum, the most careful wo man driver enrolled in A. H. S., bus 5. The seniors are in favor of hav ing ten chaperones, but Mr. Mc- Fadyen would not he pushed around, so the seniors will have one chaperone. Miss Kirby. Since Miss Kirby can’t be every where at once, she has consented to ride in each bus four hours and twelve minutes a day. A place of great interest to be visited is the scene of Lewis Mor ton’s smash into a hedge at Ba- din, N. C. The site of Bill Ridenhour’s downfall, namely, at the bottom of the Empire State Building, has attracted the seniors and will be one of the first places they will visit. The famed battlegrounds of the wars between Shipplet and Josey and Beeker and Hearne on Tele graph Hill will without doubt be viewed by the group of solemn sen iors, the boys with jaws firmly set and the girls with tears in their beautiful eyes. Now to more pleasant sites— The oil well ’in which Labe Little fell when he tripped over a Texas tow as he was escaping from A. H. S. with ail the stamp and bond money last week will draw the seniors as honey draws bears. Not so much to see where Labe fell in as to smell the oil—Ah! (Labe was rescued by a cowboy and is now milking cows to earn money to pay back that which he lost). The seniors will stop in Ken tucky, where one of their number, Margaret Pattersno, will ride Sil ver. Everyone is betting on Marg! The last of May )vill find the weary travelers in California, where they’re going, not to see (Continued on page three.)
