Tom, standing five feet eleven inches tall and weighing 160 pounds, is holding the first string position despite his physical de fect. Tom has been bothered all season by a dislocated shoulder, but a special shoulder brace en ables him to maintain his posi tion at right end. Although Tom hasn’t scored this season, he has proved his ability to play football. He has shown that he packs a whale of a blow in his blocking, running, and tackling performances. Tom is a high and mighty sen ior of A. H. S. and is playing his fourth year of football. He be gan his football career in 1943 by playing on the “B” team. In 1946 he made second string Var sity, and this year he achieved his ambition—first string right end. Tom is planning to enter col lege next year, so we are hoping to hear similar reports of him in the future. GENE BROOKS Gene Brooks, big 6-foot, 200 pound tackle, has been chosen as one of the best athletes of this month because of his amazing ability to play good football on both the offense and the defense. Gene is rated ^s the most depend able and capable man on the line. Gene started playing football when he was in “knee-pants” and has constantly improved. He made the first-string varsity in 1945, and since that time has seen much action in Albemarle’s rugged games. Gene’s football playing doesn’t end in the line, for he has shown many times his depend able ability in kicking off and punting. He is being used to fill both positions this year. Gene has a big future ahead of him in football and is definitely planning to attend some college, but, as of yet, he hasn’t decided which one he will attend. Gene has played two years of varsity basketball and has been outstanding in other sports around the school. However, his biggest pastime is playing with his little, 5 Vz-month-old baby.
