TAXI TEACHER Of the Month DONALD H. PEIFFER Have you heard the war story about the Marine who dived into a fox-hole with a Jap? A very re liable source reports that this Marine was none other than Don Peiffer! Incidentally, he killed the Jap. Well-liked by all the students, both boys and especially girls, Mr, Peiffer was chosen Teacher- of-the-Month for his spirit of “gonna win the next one”, his un dying patience, his willingness to help, and his fairness to all. He has been at A.H.S. for four years, having come originally from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Catawba college, he spent three years in the Marines, mostly in the South Pacific, and taught for one year in Pennsylvania before deciding that Albemarle was the best place to be. His schedule here includes coaching basketball and teach ing U. S. history, physical ed ucation and mathematics. Fried chicken, and shrimp, not at the same time, are his fav orite foods, but the person who serves him grits or rice is well on the way to losing his friend ship. Although his basketball team has had poor luck this year due to their lack of experience, it is obvious that, under the coaching of Mr. Peiffer, they have learned more about fair play, good sports manship, and friendship than would be possible from any oth er person. In the few years that Mr. Peif fer has been here, he has made a lasting favorable impression on those people who have' had the privilege of knowing him. Intelligentsia Answer Questions Have you heard that one of the characteristics of a scientific mind is not to believe in false probogation (form of reproduc tion) ? When asked the definition of “journal” on the bookkeeping exam, some put “the magazine women believe in”. Did you know: that rabbits are migrating crea tures? that walnut trees are ever green? that the microscope is used to study the stars? that people may be seen on the moon? that the telescope is used to isolate germs? that air pressure is measured by a speedometer? that the moon gets light from the earth? that the lungs are in the ab domen? that boiled water is sour? that tobacco is a cure for fa tigue? that mice is spelled m-i-c-t-e? Well, just in case you didn’t already know these facts, just ask the AHS students who put these on their exam papers. Harkey, Distributor Letter Received By Trade School The Veterans Trade School played Santa Claus with a gift of $132 to Marvin E. Harris, the paralytic candy salesman • who never misses a night in bringing refreshments to them. By way of thanks Mr. Harris wrote an unusually fine letter, which follows: Dear Friends, It is useless to even try to thank you adequately! But we do want to again let you know that your generosity, your thoughtfulness, has touch ed us so very much indeed. For so much, just “thank you” seems such a little, but please believe me when I say, “No one has said those two little words more sincerely.” And if your Christmas proved just one half as nice as you all help ed make mine, each and every one of you fellows had the nicest Christmas ever. Again, thanks much for everything, inqluding the privilege to call each of you “My Friend”. God bless you all! Sincerely yours, MARVIN E.
