Conrad Crotts, senior at A.H.S., was presented the Samuel Good- nfian voice scholarship in the state finals of North Carolina Federation of Music clubs held in Raleigh on April 15. Conrad is entitled to summer study at the Julliard school in New York City. For several years, Mr. Good man of Concord has awarded the scholarship annually, and this is the first time that a male soloist has won the award. Conrad has sung in three con tests this year as well as for various clubs here in Albemarle. In the district choral contests held in Salisbury this spring he re ceived a rating of Superior plus. 5 New Members (Continued from Page One) basis of their scholarship, leader ship, character, and service. Fol lowing the Scripture reading by Martha Moore and a prayer by Lib Starr, -Henry Forrest sang “Thanks Be To God”, with Mr. Fry accompanying at the piano. Roy Holt spoke on the ideals of the society, after which Connie McLain presented a piano selec tion. A solo, “Prayer Perfect”, by Gaynelle Chandler completed the first of the program. The new members were then tapped and brought to the stage. Mr. McFadyen led them in the Honor Society pledge and they signed the roll book, thus be coming full-fledged members of the organization. Scholarship Dance Band Plays For Endy Banquet The A.H.S. dance band played for the Endy high school Junior- Senior banquet on April 23. Popular music, which made up the majority of songs used for this occasion, was played throughout the dinner. The 15 members of the dance band are Frank Burrell, Johnny Knight, Jimmy Brown, Jimmy M. Brown, Benny Herrin, Donald Tucker, Johnny Eagle, John Her rin, William Litaker, Larry Hart- sell, Bobby Cree, Paul Suggs, Lewis Hinson and Clegg Herrin. Sidney Efird is pianist and Ern est Burleson manager of the band. Council Officers Will Be Elected Tuesday, May 23 Candidates for Student Council officers for next year will be chosen at conventions to be held May 16. Two conventions will be held, one at Central elementary school and one at Albemarle high school. Campaign speeches will be made in assembly on Friday, May 17. Elections will follow on Tuesday, May 23, to select the officers. The president is selected from the rising twelfth grade; the vice-president from the rising eleventh grade; the secretary from the rising tenth grade; and the treasurer from either the ris ing tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grades. Superior ratings were given to the Mixed Chorus, Conrad Crotts, baritone soloist, and Marilyn Green, soprano soloist. Contest numbers sung by the Mixed Chorus were “Come Thou Holy Spirit” by Tschesnokoff and “Send Forth Thy Spirit” by Schiy etky, Conrad’s song was “The Hills of Home” by Fox. “Sesqui- dilla,” a Spanish love song, was Marilyn’s solo. Those receiving excellent ra tings were the Boys’ Quartet con sisting of Henry Forrest, Kent Willis, Harold Hudson and Ar thur Burris; the Girls’ Trio com posed of Gaynelle Chandler, Joyce Crowell and Peggy Shan- kle; and Henry Forrest, tenor so loist, who sang “Top of the Morn ing” by Mannazucca.
