TEACHER
Of Month
SPENCER HATLEY
Could you think of a better
way to start off a morning’s
work than to the beating of
drums and too-tooting of musical
instruments? Well, this is none
other than the AHS band led by
that congenial, dependable, and
well-known man, Spencer Hat
ley, who has been chosen teach-
er-of-the month.
Mr. Hatley is a local native,
having graduated from AHS in
1934. He attended Eastern Caro
lina Teachers College for 3 years,
‘38-‘41, served in the armed
forces 4 years, and then returned
to ECTC in ‘46 to graduate with
a B. S. degree. His musical in
terests took him to the Universi
ty of North Carolina Summer
School and the National Music
post graduate work.
Mr. Hatley served as princi
pal and band director in a school
in South Carolina before coming
to Albemarle high. During his
four years at AHS he has de
veloped an outstanding band,
starting from rock bottom and is
recognized as one of the state’s
outstanding band directors. He
and his band have participated
in Christmas parades, concerts,
and various projects in Albe
marle and nearby towns. He has
a wide experience as a trumpet
player in bands and dance
bands, and still can’t turn down
an offer to play for a dance.
Listen for him on the trumpet
when the band plays that ever
popular “Drum Major’s Special”
at the Homecoming game to
night.
Intramural sports will get un
der way as soon as the football
season is over, according to a
statement made recently by coach
Webb.

8th Grade News
A summons wasn’t received by
the eighth grades, but the stu
dents were interested in witness
ing a trial, so they attended a
court session a few weeks ago.
However, upon arriving at the
county courthouse, they were
told that the case had been set
tled before the litigants were to
appear. But wait! The trip prov
ed to be far more interesting than
the students had anticipated.
The presiding judge. Judge Hoyle-
Sink, gave the entire courtroom
a very interesting talk on de
mocracy and his trip to Korea.
Students who attended were
from Mrs. Ivey’s and Mrs. Saun
ders’ rooms.

the A.H.S. front campus? The
boys from Mrs. Ivey’s room have
assumed full responsibility for
raising and bringing down this
