Page 6 THE FULL MOON March, 1956 The Music Goes Round and Round By FISH STEPPIN’ ALONG: Beads of perspiration could plainly be seen on Mr. Hauss’s forehead and neck and his voice quivered somewhat as he announced the three num bers, but with the skill and poise of a seasoned veteran, he led the Albemarle High Band to a rating of Excellent at the district band contest in Salisbury on March 10. The performance, consisting of “New Colonial March,” “Sunlit Summits Overture,” and “Then- dora Overture,” was judged by Earl Sloucum of U.N.C., Dr. Paul Bryan of Duke University, and George Dickerson of W. C. U. N. C., who gave the band ratings of I, II, and III, respectively. As in previous years, the con test was the culmination of long, hard rehearsals and intensive home practice (Just ask the neighbors of one certain bass player if you don’t believe THAT!) First clarinets, Jerry Lou Hol- bert, Jimmy Miller, and Gary Whitley, and flutist, Pamela Hin son, received very favorable com ment from the judges, while Dr. Bryan said that Mary Jo Winn’s piccolo playing “had excellent tone and .was remarkably well in tune.” Rogell Hunsucker’s brilliant performance on the baritone horn was also enthusiastically receiv ed by the judges and caused Air - Conditioned CENTRAL BARBER SHOP FRED O. His safe and sane driving was appreciated by all. Other bands at the contest were Kings Mountain, Concord, Rock ingham, Dallas, Winecoff, and Granite Quarry. The band members were very glad to see Mr. Spencer B. Hatley, former director of the band, who is now selling instruments. Inci dentally, he’s replaced that bronze-colored Ford with a hand some green Pontiac station wag on. Cary McSwain, Richard Peck, and the author of this column served as stage managers. * * :|c ON THE BEAT: Band members who had hoped to loaf along the remainder of the year are going to be surely disappointed. A few of the band’s future jobs include its spring concert, a con cert at West Albemarle Elemen tary School, and the Easter Sun rise Service at Stoney Hill Church. A treat in store for the march ing band is the banquet, to be held on April 10. The Civitans, who are sponsoring the banquet, plan to make it an annual affair.
