Page 4 THE FULL MOON May, 1956 BULLDOG BARKS Athletes of the Month 'COUPE DE GRACE' GIVEN FOES AS BULLDOGS FINISH SEASON Johnny Richardson In this month’s issue of the Full Moon we would like to sa lute a boy that has served the football and basketball teams all during his high school days. For four years Wheaties, as you all know him, has been manager of both the football and basketball teams. A lot of work has gone into the management of the teams and Wheaties has really done his part in making it a suc cess. During the football season Wheaties would always be on the move to get everything ready for a big game. This year he was a senior Hi-Y member and played on the “Y” Basketball team. He is also in the National Honor Society and a student Rotarian. He runs the mile for the track team and has participated in several track Undefeated and starting a new winning streak, this year’s Bull dogs were the best yet. Football season began slowly, as the Bull dogs weren’t too impressive in their first game, but then they exploded and went on to win this conference and then the mighty Bulldogs came from behind to beat Ashboro and win the com plete conference title. Wade Smith was named to the SCHOLASTIC PREP MAGAZINE ALL-AMERICAN team. He also was a unanimous All-State selec tion and was recently invited to play in the All-Star game in Greensboro. He made All-Confer- ence and along with him on this Billy Fitzgerald Another manager for the foot ball team is Billy Fitzgerald. He has served as manager of the football team for three years and has had a big part in the suc cess of the team. Billy would always be on the move and was very dependable. This year he was vice president of the Hi-Y Club and played on the “Y” Basketball team. He was a student Lion, in the senior play, and also participated in Field Day, He is on the track team also this year. Jimmy Coggins was named All-Conference. Jimmy, Franchot Palmer, and Edshay Brunson received All-State hon orable mention in the state pa pers. Best game was probably the Bulldog win over Kannap olis. Baseball season then came and an inexperienced team did a very good job. The 4-10 record was better than it may seem. The conference teams haven’t been named yet, but AHS hoped to have a few on them when they do come out. Junior Amazons Take Field Day Field day at Albemarle High School was the same exciting event, as usually is the case, with the junior class racking 1265 points to take first place. The senior class battled to a strong lead early in the stated events only to lose in the fading moments by taking 1212 points and second place. The sopho mores took third with 687and the freshmen were fourth with 575. The events: High Jump: (1) Larry Lisk, (2) Max Lowder, (3) tie: Aaron Lowder, Cary McSwain. C, PENNEY COMPANY **Always First Quality** Teen-agers* Headquarters For Sportswear Wade Sets Record: Team Looks Good Wade Smith set a new record in the broad jump at the Western North Carolina High School Ac tivities Association’s seventh an nual track meet at Davidson, May 11. His jump was 20 ft. 11% inches. This bettered the old mark, also set by him, by nearly an inch. Albemarle’s points were ac counted for by Wade Smith’s first in the Broad Jump, Punk Gantt’s third place in the 220 and 100 Yard Dashes, Larry Lisk’s third place in the High Jump, and Lane and Jerry Lowder’s third and fourth in the Discus. AHS Second AHS engaged Lexington, Win ston-Salem Hanes, and Winston- Salem' Gray in a meet at Lexing ton, April 12. The AHS charges finished second in competition, being beaten only by the potent Lexington' boys. The meet was a close match between the two, with Lexington nosing ahead in the final minutes. Albemarle boys placing in events were Larry Lisk — High Jump (4), Wade Smith — Broad Jump (1), Punk Gantt — Shot- put (2), Larry Lisk — Shotput '(3), 100 Yard Dash — Punk Gantt (1), Wade Smith — 100 Yard Dash (2), Wade Smith — 220 Yard Dash (1), Punk Gantt — 220 Yard Dash (2), Edshay Brunson — 440 Yard’ Dash (3), Jerry' Lowder — Discus (2), and Lane Lowder — Discus (1). Bulldogs Shine Albemarle’s cindermen lost a thrilling track meet by a bare minimum April 19, at Kannap olis. When final points were tal lied, local boys were 10 points behind. Scoring points for the Bulldogs were Larry Lisk — High Jump (3), Punk Gantt — 100 Yard Dash (2), Wade Smith — 100 Yard Dash (2), Broad Jump (1), and 220 Yard Dash (1), Edshay Brun son — 440 (2), Jerry Lowder — Discus, and Lane Lowder — Dis cus. Elimination Meet The local tracksters made a good showing May 4 at States ville in the South Piedmont eliminations. The top six in each event become eligible to compete in the district track meet, held Although Albemarle got a very poor start at the first of the base ball season, their pitching and hitting has improved very much. Albemarle ended their season with a winning streak of four games, mainly on the strength of several sophomores and fresh men. Albemarle 5; Winecoff 2 Gerald Johnson did a master ful job in pitching Albemarle to a 5-2 win over Winecoff in their final game of the season. Bobby Coggins was the big gun in the Albemarle attack as he picked up two hits and scored once. The Bulldogs managed only four hits off Winecoff pitching, but still turned them in to a final win. China Grove 2; Albemarle 1 Bobby Coggins and Sonny Lip- pard locked up in a tight pitch ers’ duel in the local park, with China Grove coming out on top by a score of 2-1. Coggins went the entire dis tance for Albemarle and struck out fourteen. Jimmy Coggins paced the batting with a pair of singles and scored their only run. Lippard held the Albemarle team to five hits and struck out six. Rowell and Shinn were the leading hitters. Albemarle 3; Monroe 2 A.H.S. defeated Monroe 3-2 on Monroe’s home field. This game counted as two wins for the Bull dogs since one had been rained out earlier in the season. Jimmy Coggins pitched the full game for Albemarle and scattered seven hits while striking out twelve. Bobby Coggins was the lead ing hitter at the plate with three hits in four times at bat. Craig did the pitching for Mon roe and Horse Howell hit a home- run in the first inning. Kannapolis 4; Albemarle 3 Albemarle Bulldogs lost a thrilling game to the “Little Wonders” from Kannapolis ^ a score of 4-3. Gerald Johnson started his first game for Albemarle and gave up only five hits. The Bulldogs mustered only four hits off Kannapolis with Jimmy Coggins being the leading hitter. Leroy Scearcy’s hitting was the main factor in the win for the “Little Wonders”. annually at Davidson College.
