Page 4 THE FULL MOON December, 1957 Webb's '57 Bulldog Team Reigns As Supreme Champions bulldog babks Athletes Of The Month LARRY MULLIS Mr. “Golden Toe”, the 100-carat PAT man on the Bulldog squad, has racked up a brilliant 80.5% record for points kicked after touchdowns. In eight games Larry Mullis successfully booted 37 out of 46 extra-point attempts . Larry’s biggest night came when the team growled against Mooresville. The plungers, passers, and sprinters tasted touch down dirt eight times, and after every 6-point gain, Larry came through with the seventh point. The post-season swim with Lexington was clinched for Al bemarle by Larry’s conversion. His steady performance also ex tended to frequent reserve action. To a dependable blocking back with the trigger toe, we give an Athlete-of-the-Month salute. AL FUSONZE To industry and the North we shout our thanks for sending down South the Bulldogs’ left linebacker. This hard hitter would be a Fuse-on-any team. On offense, A1 ran the reserve fullback position with the same ready spirit and enthusiastic determina tion that sparked his every performance. He kept the opposition screaming for relief with his solid tackles and touchdowns. In recognition of A1 Fusonie’s willing, plucky participation in this lazy-speaking Webb country, we award him the honor of being an Athlete-of-the-Month for December. After the kick-off to the Mar ion team, the Bulldogs showed their supremacy. Marion moved the ball down to the Albemarle 25 with what seemed to be a successful touchdown drive be fore having to give the ball over to the Bulldog team. Albemarle took over on its own 25-yard line and began a 75-yard march for the touchdown. Roger Whit ley, Roger Smith, and Graham Harwood sparked the Bulldogs’ offense all the way down the field. Whitley took over on the Marion 17 and entered the end zone for the first touchdown of the night. Larry Mullis’ attempt for the extra point was perfect, and the clock glowed a bright 7-0 score for the Bulldogs. Early in the second quarter, Marion launched what turned out to be its only scoring drive of the night. Taking over on their own 37-yard line, Marion drove all the way for the TD with Barry Ramsey and Leonard Go forth sparking the unit. Goforth went into the end zone from three yards out for the TD. The extra point attempt was wide and the margin narrowed, as the score stood 7-6, Albemarle. On and on the Bulldogs went as the offense and defense be gan to click. The Bulldogs chalked up 469 yards rushing and 54 points for the night. Al bemarle’s wingback, Roger Smith, scored three times on his famous reverse, and fullback Roger Whit ley crossed the line three times. Graham Harwood went over for one TD and passed for another to Don Montgomery. Larry Mullis converted for six extra points, and the scoring column was com plete. Roger Whitley Is Shrine- Bowl Back Roger Whitley, the star full back and co-captain of the champion A.H.S. Bulldogs, Was selected as “one of the chosen few” high school seniors to par ticipate in the Shrine Bowl clas sic. Whitley, who has sparked the Bulldogs all season, gaining over 2,000 yards rushing, pulled double duty last week as he helped his teammates beat Mar ion for the Western North Caro lina championship, Wednesday night. The big, 215-pound, human bulldozer is the eleventh player to be sent to the Shrine Bowl by Coach Toby Webb. Jerry Low-^ der and Lane Lowder were the 1956 players, while Wade Smith played in the honor game in 1955. Whitley, a converted tackle, has recently been named by the coaches of several colleges as the number one choice of this state’s high school players. As soon as Saturday’s game was over he was the object of many college scouts, as he has one of the finest records that any schoolboy has ever made. 310 Montgomery Avenue Phone YU 2-2215 VOGUE BEAUTY SHOP OPERATORS Mrs. Frances Winn Sara Archer J.
