Athletes Of The Month
GRAHAM HARWOOD
Athletics presents no obstacle to Albemarle High School’s
Graham Harwood. Graham participates in all three of AHS’s
major sports: football, basketball, and baseball.
Graham has been of great value to his teams, as he has
gained a first string position and lettered in these sports for the
past two years.
Graham is known well for his quickness, alertness, and
sportsmanship. Whether on the football or baseball field or in
the gym, Graham’s actions show him to be a good sport.
Besides extra-curricular activities, Graham is active in his
school work. He gained a part in the senior play and is serving
as vice president of the senior class. For all his contributions
and achievements, we give Graham Harwood an Athlete of the
Month salute.
MARTHA HUCKABEE
Basketball season is over now, but our Athlete of the Month
column wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t have the name Martha
Huckabee in it.
Martha was co-captain of the ’57-’58 girls’ basketball team
this year. She played a forward position and did a very good
job, as she scored 137 points in l4 conference games.
Even though the girls didn’t have a very successful season,
we know they were trying because of their cheery co-captain.
Martha has proved to be a good leader not only on the bas
ketball court but in school work as well. She was the first person
to be tapped into the National Honor Society this fall. She has
served as president of the F.T.A. and the Booster’s Club. We are
proud to have Martha Huckabee as our March Athlete of the
Month.
Springtime Extra-Curricular
Well, the time has almost come and spring is just around
the corner. As you know, “In the spring a young man’s fancy
turns to . . . baseball, track and tennis.
A sure sign of spring is the crack of the baseball as the old
horsehide hits the bat. And at A. H. S. the bats are out and the
baseballs are flying. Baseball is in full swing now and Coach
Bill Lippard is expecting to have a good season, with most of
last year’s team back.
Another sign of spring is when the boys put on shorts and
track shoes, and begin working out every day on the athletic
field. They too are expecting a good season this year.
A new sign of spring that has been added to A. H. S. is the
revival of tennis. The tennis courts have been asphalted and a
fresh coat of paint given to them. New nets have been pur
chased and put up and a tennis team has been formed, under
the direction of Coach Ken Frazier.
As spring draws closer and closer, we are sure that all three
teams will have a good season and A. H. S. will be well represented.
Montgomery Makes All-SPC
His outstanding performances throughout the season and
his fine showing in tournament play have placed Don Montgomery
on the first string All-South-Piedmont Conference basketball team.
Don, a six foot, two-inch junior, has sparked the A. H. S.
team all season, being the Bulldogs’ top scorer and also among
the top scorers of the Piedmont area, Don was chosen not only
for his shooting abilities but also for his rebounding and defensive
play. His top performance came on the last game of the season,
when he scored 37 points against Winecoff.
