May 28, 1958 THE FULL MOON Page 5 Quartet Performs For Rotary‘Club “There’s Nothing Like a Dame” was one of the lively numbers with which the Boys’ Double Quartet entertained Rotary Club members last Thursday at the Hotel Albemarle. These boys, Mr. Paul Fry, and Peggy Smith were guests of Mr. R. L. Brown, Jr., chairman of the school board, for the luncheon meeting. KATHRYN: “TOMMY, WILL you see Cary anytime soon?” Tommy: “I will if I see him in just a minute.” Shorthand Honors Given To Six Girls Shorthand certificates were awarded to six girls on May 2, by the Gregg Publishing Company. Receiving recognition for their work on a three-minute, eighty- word-per-minute test were Linda Barnes, Cynthia Efird, Aldena Harrington, and Marlene Price. Gail Vanderburg waS awarded a certificate^for her work on a three - minute, sixty - word-per- minute test, and Gale Whitfield was presented with a certificate for work on a five-minute, sixty- word-per-minute test. Mrs. Carter is their instructor. Rotarians Enjoy Musical Program “In the Still of the Night”, sung by the Ninth Grade Girls’ Ensemble, was a special feature of the program presented by the Ninth Grade Chorus for the Ro tary Club three weeks ago. From the first song, “I Believe”, to the climactic finale, “Born to Be Free”, the singers received a hearty response from their au dience. Numbers especially en joyed by the Rotarians were “Tea for Two” and “Night and Day”, which were accompanied by 0. J. Sikes, HI, on the drums. This chorus gave a similar con cert for the East Albemarle P-TA a few days prior to the Rotary Club performance. Doby Is Selected As FTA President New officers of the F.T.A. have been elected for next year. They are: president, Linda Doby; vice-president, Martha Ann Smith; secretary, Myra Carpen ter; treasurer, Judy Redfern; Ten AHS Students Attend Symposium Ten students from AHS attend ed the North Carolina Junior Sci ence Symposium at Duke, UNC, and State. They were Sue Tuck er, Mary Jo Winn, Harry Whit ley, Jerry Lou Holbert, Millie Hatley, Landis Miller, Roger Laney, Neil Efird, Homer Bla lock, Charles Brown, and Mrs. Hatley and Mrs. Rogers accom panied the group. The program lasted for three days, May 7, 8, and 9. The theme was “Science in the Making— Research in Progress”. Each person attending was giv en a blue book to write their re actions to the symposium. Most of them expressed the fact that their background in mathematics and science had made the pro gram more interesting and im pressive. All the members were impress ed with the displays and lec tures. The students stayed in the dormitories and at the fairground Youth Center. chaplain, Aldena Harrington. F.T.A. members are presently making plans for the installa tion of these officers. Miller Is Elected Senior President Jimmy Miller has been elected by the juniors to serve as presi dent of the senior class for the coming year. Jimmy is very outstanding in many school activities. In ad dition to having been student di rector of the AHS band, he is also drum' major. The other officers elected were George Harwood, vice-president; Jane Chandler, secretary; and Douglas Eury, treasurer. Miss Chicora Caughman will serve as class sponsor again. George Harwood is an active junior, especially in the Mixed Chorus where he is now a mem ber of the Moys’ Double Quartet. Jane Chandler has served her class in many ways. She was a commencement marshal last year and has held a first string po sition on the varsity basketball team. Douglas Eury, outstanding stu dent, has been chosen the busi ness manager of the Full Moon for next year. “Pat, is Norris fast?”—I mean as far as track is concerned.”— Sue Winn. Compliments Of G. C.
