October 31, 1958 THE FULL MOON Page 5 Valiani' Bulldogs Bow To Harding Fighting against overwhelming odds, the Albemarle Bulldogs fell before an inspired Charlotte Harding team by a score of 13 to 7. The ■ loss was the Bulldogs’ first regular season setback since early in 1952, when Kannapolis turned the trick. The game also brought to a halt an 18- game winning streak which be gan with the first of last season. Albemarle drew first blood on a 56-yard drive that began with a pass interception on the Bull dog 44-yard line. They went the distance in 11 plays, the clincher being a pass from Dudley Roache to Johnny Almond in the end zone. Johnny Saunders booted true and the Bulldogs led 7 to 0. Harding’s first touchdown came quickly. As the Bulldogs were knocking on touchdown door, Harding intercepted a short pass and raced 75 yards untouch-’ ed for the score. The extra point was good and the score was 7 to 7. The half ended with the Bull dogs on the two-yard line, and although Harding gained only 11 yards rushing and got no first downs the entire first half, the score stood 7 to 7. Harding’s final score came on a one-yard plunge to climax a drive that was kept alive by a 28-yard pass play. The Bulldogs never gave up, however, and they had the ball on the move when the game end ed. Although the Bulldogs led in every department except the score, the game goes down in the record books as: Charlotte Harding 13, Albemarle 7. The China Grove team bom barded the Bulldogs secondary with an amazing 28 passes, but only 13 found their mark, thus stopping the Grovers’ attack on the Bulldogs. The big gun in the Bulldogs win over China Grove was the running of Albemarle’s fleet- footed Roger Smith, who pene trated the Grovers’ goal Ime for three timely touchdowns. Albemarle Dumps Blue Devils 34-6 The Bulldogs slapped a number 98 to the list of Coach Webb’s Albemarle victories as they downed the Mooresville Blue Devils 34-6. Bulldog linemen really gave a spectacular show to the fans of how to break up a defensive line, as they sprang four long touchdown runs against Moores ville. Larry Palmer, running full back, ripped the center of the line for the first Bulldog TD on a run of 48 yards. Wingback Johnny Almond completely fool- ►ed the Blue Devil defense with his famous reverse for 49 yards and a second TD for ASHS. Drip Kimrey set up another score as he intercepted a pass and brought it back 32 yards. Roger Smith got restless and romped off with the pigskin for 66 yards and the third Albemarle score. TD number four was delivered by Larry Palmer as he reeled off 52 yards from his fullback po sition. The only Mooresville score of the evening came when Bill May- hew broke through from the 5- yard line. This brought the to tal number of points scored by Mooresville on Albemarle in the last seven games between the two to 18. “Pep” Mabry tossed an 8- yard pass to Don Montgomery to complete the scoring honors of the evening and to wrap up Albe marle’s seventeenth consecutive win. In a pre-game story concern ing ;the Bulldogs and the Harding game two weeks ago, Roger was nicknamed “The Rajah”. “That,” says Mr. Webster, “means king, chief, or prince.” “The score is one to one in favor of the Braves.” — Judv Kluttz.
