BULLDOG BARKS
MIKE WOLFE
Every good football team needs a steady, level-headed lead
er who can be counted on, and our first Athlete of the Month,
co-captain Mike Wolfe, certainly fits the bill.
Mike is a two-year veteran of varsity play, and is experienced
in the key backfield positions he plays. As an offensive player
he performs in the alternate role of blocking back and fullback,
while on defense his alertness and speed make him a valuable
performer in the Bulldogs’ secondary.
He may carry the nickname of “Droopy” off the field, but
as indicated by his fine play, Mike is anything but that when
it comes to playing football. Therefore, we are proud to hon
or him as the Athlete of the Month.
JIMMY BURRIS
“He gets the job done” can be an accurate description of the
Athlete of the Month, Jimmy Burris.
Easy-going and good-natured off the field, Jimmy is all
business when it comes to performing on the gridiron. He is
a fine blocker on offense and carries out all assignments given
to him. Jimmy also performs capably on the defensive unit
at the defensive tackle position.
‘‘Bo,” as he is popularly known to ASHS students, is in his
third season as a member of the varsity, and as a tribute to his
football prowess, we salute him as the Athlete of the Month for
a job well done.
Ready. Bulldogs?
Cartoons at the movies often picture a Bulldog as the divine
ruler of his neighborhood and a tough customer to deal with.
For the past six seasons that’s just what our Albemarle Bull
dog has been as far as the now-deceased South Piedmont Con
ference IS concerned.
This fall, the Bulldog has moved to a new neighborhood con
taining some new challengers to his crown. We are speaking
of course, of the new AAA Conference containing new-comers
Asheboro, Thomasville, and Statesville. In addition, several old
rivals from his old neighborhood, such as Concord, Kannapolis,
Landis, and China Grove, have followed our crafty canine to his
new home.
Therefore, it should be quite interesting to see the outcome
football hostilities are over in the neighborhood in
Bulldog will be able to bring to
AoHS a new conference title, but win or lose, we know he will
Sive a good account of himself and add to the prestige and name
of the school he represents, so go sic’em. Bulldog!
Help Player Win Picture
Who’s your favorite ASHS football player? Now you have
a chance to give him your support.
M(wse s Clothing Store is featuring a contest in which the
boy who receives the greatest number of votes as the favorite
player on the team will win a 40" by 80" picture of the foot-
bail team. This large photograph will be on display in the
window of Mooses during the entire football season.
Bulldogs Beaten
By Strong Team
A fired- up Lexington team
bumped off a very good Albe
marle team Friday night at the
Albemarle High Stadium with a
score of 12-7.
The Yellow Jackets’ attack was
formed around Junior Webster,
their versatile fullback and half
back. Webster scored both of
Lexington’s TD’s and was hard
to stop all night.
One of Lexington’s touchdowns
was made in the second quarter
with the PAT being no good. This
put the Bulldogs down in the ball
game 6-0.
The Bulldogs, not being one to
give up, roared back in the same
quarter with a score by Steve
Burieson. The Bulldogs ran the
PAT over, with Jerry Smith car
rying the ball. This score put
the Bulldogs ahead 7-6.
In the last minutes of the
fourth quarter Webster again
carried the ball into the end zone
for a score. The PAT was again
no good.

Last-Minute PAT
Downs Red Devils
With only 53 seconds left in
the game, the Albemarle Bull
dogs scored the winning touch
down to send China Grove’s Red
Devils to a 7-6 defeat.
Jerry Smith scored the winning
touchdown and ran over the ex
tra point, but it was called back.
Smith then passed to end Kent
Montgomery for the PAT, which

proved to be the dagger in China
Grove’s back.
The Grovers scored their lone
^lly in the last quarter, when
Tommy Kelly tossed a 23-yard
heave to end Eddie Mills for the
tally, which was on a “fourth and
ten” situation. The PAT was no
good, a miss which proved to be
decisive.
Sparkling for the Bulldogs on
defensive were Underwood, Bur
ns, Wolfe, Mabe, and Burleson.
On offense Mike “Droopy” Wolfe
excelled at the new fullback’s
position, along with tailback J.
Smith and end Montgomery.
For the Bulldogs it was the
first South Piedmont Conference
test, and they proved worthy ad
versaries for any team they play.
