November 18, 1960 THE FULL MOON Page 5 Chilly Fans See Last-Second Win Excitement was an under statement Friday night as hud dled and heavily clad local fans watched the Bulldogs catch fire within the last minute of the Landis Homecoming game. After playing a seesaw battle during the first half, the Bull dogs held the Yellow Jackets of Landis several times very deep in their territory. With last min utes running out, the Bulldogs’ "do-or-die” determination play ed an important factor as Albe marle, with several long runs, penetrated deep into Landis’ ter ritory. Nelson Smith threw a beauti ful pass to Kent Montgomery, who ran the ball to the two-yard line. The scoreboard clock show ed 15 seconds left in the game. A cold chill ran over the stands. “Will they be able to outrun the clock?” was the predominate question. With 12 seconds left. Mike Wolfe rammed up the mid dle for the; score. The extra point was no good and the score remained 6-0 in favor of Albe marle. Words alone are insuf ficient to describe the rejoicing and feelings of the Bulldog fans. Perhaps one way to describe the victory was when the band played for its last number, “Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight.” For Landis, it was truly a heartbreaker. During the time when the two teams have met. Landis has never won a football game over the Bulldogs. Next year China Grove and Landis will consolidate to form South Rowan High School. NELSON SMITH PICKS 'EM UP Tailback Nelson^ Smith evades several Rockingham tacklers to break into the Rockets’ sec ondary for substantial yardage in the fourth quarter. Rockingham held a decisive edge in game statistics, but had to fight hard to down Coach Gantt’s Bulldogs. Final score was 20-0. Last Game Lost To Blue Comets In the last game of the sea son Albemarle lost a thriller tc the Asheboro Blue Comets by the score of 13-0. , . , • j It was late in the third period before Asheboro oould squeeze a touchdown out of the strong Al bemarle defense. The Statesville Greyhounds tal lied , first when fullback Jim ELsley scored in the second pe riod. The P. A. T. try was no good. Again during the second period end Gilmer Murdock took a pass from quarterback Tommy Neely for the score. This made the score 12-0, the P. A. T. being no good. After intermission the Bulldogs came out fighting mad. Albe marle marched for two first downs before giving up the ball on do\yns. The Bulldogs got the ball again and marched 85 yards for a score, Jerry Smith carrying the ball over. Jerry Smith ran the ball over for the P-A-T. This made the score 17-7 in favor of Statesville. During the fourth period States ville tallied their last score on a fine run by quarterback Tommy Neely. The P. A. T. was good also. This ended the scoring for the evening at 19-7. The second touchdown came in the fourth period and the P.A.T. was missed. The Bulldogs’ best offense show of the night came from the T- formation with sweeps ground he ends. For Co-captains Mike Wolfe and Bo Burris, Gary Mauldin, William Walker, Kent Montgom ery, Mike Fusonie, Steve Isen- hour and Craven Morton, it was their last game for Albemarle Senior High School.
