Chilly Fans See
Last-Second Win
Excitement was an under
statement Friday night as hud
dled and heavily clad local fans
watched the Bulldogs catch fire
within the last minute of the
Landis Homecoming game.
After playing a seesaw battle
during the first half, the Bull
dogs held the Yellow Jackets of
Landis several times very deep
in their territory. With last min
utes running out, the Bulldogs’
"do-or-die” determination play
ed an important factor as Albe
marle, with several long runs,
penetrated deep into Landis’ ter
ritory.
Nelson Smith threw a beauti
ful pass to Kent Montgomery,
who ran the ball to the two-yard
line. The scoreboard clock show
ed 15 seconds left in the game.
A cold chill ran over the stands.
“Will they be able to outrun
the clock?” was the predominate
question. With 12 seconds left.
Mike Wolfe rammed up the mid
dle for the; score. The extra
point was no good and the score
remained 6-0 in favor of Albe
marle. Words alone are insuf
ficient to describe the rejoicing
and feelings of the Bulldog fans.
Perhaps one way to describe the
victory was when the band played
for its last number, “Hot Time in
the Old Town Tonight.”
For Landis, it was truly a
heartbreaker. During the time
when the two teams have met.
Landis has never won a football
game over the Bulldogs. Next
year China Grove and Landis
will consolidate to form South
Rowan High School.
NELSON SMITH PICKS 'EM UP
Tailback Nelson^ Smith evades several Rockingham tacklers to break into the Rockets’ sec
ondary for substantial yardage in the fourth quarter. Rockingham held a decisive edge in
game statistics, but had to fight hard to down Coach Gantt’s Bulldogs. Final score was 20-0.
