Jimmy Barbee, a two-year vet eran, started the season holding down the position of wingback, New Program Is Used In Phys Ed. For the first time at A.S.H.S. a three-year program is being u^d m tne gins' pnysical educa tion department. Heading this program is Mrs. Nancy Gamewell. During the week she is working with the sophomores and mainly stressing team sports. The combination eleventh and twelfth grade class is gradually changing to individual sports. This is to teach the students sports which they will be able to use after they finish school. Several activities, such as, vol leyball, tennis, and physical con ditioning, will be used all three years because the students will more than likely have a chance to use them after high school. Another new addition to the program is rhythms. The tenth grades will have fundamental rhythms; eleventh and twelfth graders will have early Ameri can and modern rhythms. A free choice activity will help the students review some of the former activities. From the combination class will come the Intramural assist ants. but later in the season he was switched to tailback. He served the Bulldogs well with some spec tacular runs that usually ended with a touchdown. Jimmy is a good ballplayer and always does his best whether he is on the field or off the field. Ronnie Howard played won derful ball for the Bulldogs by holding down the posit.on of end. Ronnie, also a two-year man, did a lot for the team by his wonderful spirit and team work. He is an extra good de fensive end, and this counts a lot when the chips are down. These boys were chosen to rep- -esent their team because of their ability as leaders. Wrestling Coming The Albemarle Senior High wrestling team will begin its new season in January. The Bulldogs are expecting a good season this year, with many of last year’s wrestlers back on the mats again. Returning from last year’s squad are lettermen Raymond Perry, Terry Mabe, Jimmy Nance Johnny Furr, Benny Harwood and Shuck Miller. With these are others who are expected to see a lot of action during the season. Rounding out the team are some new boys who are westling for the first time this year, but are already be ginning to look good. The team has elected Benny Harwood and Jimmy Nance as their nevs^ co-captains. Both Jimmy and Benny, who are Seniors, have fine records ai^ wrestlers for Albemarle Senior High. Jimmy and Benny hav0 had much experience on the mats, each having wrestled foif three years. Both boys have won their letter in this sport. During the four years Albe marle has had a wrestling team two members have won the tror phy for the “Outstanding Wrest in all weight classes. They were A1 Fusonie and Kenneth Furr. Visit Water Plant Chemistry and Physics students, accompanied by Mr. R. C. Hatley, science teacher, visited the water plant during the past week. All-Conference squad. The four Albemarle lads—Jerry Smith, Jeff Underwood, Johnny Furr, and Steve Burleson — all seniors this year at Albemarle Senior High, played superlative ball throughout the campaign for Coach Bob Gantt and were highly instrumental in the out standing 6-4 won-lost record compiled by the Bulldogs against the rugged and stout opposition. Fullback Jerry Smith was the workhorse in the Bulldogs’ back- Intramural Sports Program Is Good Soccer and volleyball are the intramural sports currently in progress. The boys’ soccer and the girls’ volleyball competition are being narrowed to the semi-final stages. The sports to be considered next are girls’ and boys’ basketball and boys’ wrestling. Also under consideration for the near future are boys’ and girls’ badminton, boys’ and girls’ tennis, singles and doubles tennis, separate track events, and horseshoes. Also being discussed by the coaches is the annual field day. Although no definite plans have been made for the individual events, the intramural field day will be held. field, carrying the ball an aver age of 22 times in every game he played, averaging five yards per try. Jerry was the leading scorer for the team with 63 points. Tackle Jeff Underwood was the offensive and defensive quarter back for the Bulldogs. Jeff’s ag gressive and determined play in the forward wall left little to be desired. Right in there taking the bruises along with Jeff was one of the Bulldogs’ fine tri-captains, guard Johnny Furr. Johnny proved to be one of the toughest players in the forward wall of the Bulldogs. End Steve Burleson played his position with much skill and de termination, tackling opposing ball carriers with savage force and also being on the receiving end of numerous passes thrown by Albemarle backs.
