April 1, 1965 Albemarle Welcomes WDNCSCC ASHS Students Nominated For Gov.'s School Seven students, Whit Morrow, Bill Hartsell, Betsy Patterson, Lin da Long, Vickie Alexander, Tony Senter, and Debbie Weemhoff, have been nominated for Gover nor’s School, an eight-week sum mer program held at Salem Col lege. Tony Senter, nominated to study music, and Debbie Weemhoff, nominated to study in the field of art, attended auditions in which they performed or displayed their talent at Harding High School, Charlotte, March 13. The other nominees listed above have been chosen to study in academic fields. Records, recommendations, and test scores have been sent to the proper authorities for all nomi nees. Their favorite subject and the subject in which they have the most ability were also indicated. MOONBEAMS Lion And Rotarian Terry Lorch and Jimmy Low- der have been selected to serve as Student Lion and Rotarian dur ing the month of March, respec tively. Terry is president of the Math and Debate Clubs, chaplain of Modern Music Masters and the National Honor Society, treasurer of the Senior Class, and a mern- ber of the Science Club. In his church, he serves as president of the Luther League. Jimmy is serving as vice-presi dent of the National Honor So ciety and is a member of the Sci ence, Debate, Math, and Booster Clubs. He is also in the band and Modern Music Ma!ters. Jr.-Sr. Prom The annual Junior-Senior Prom jvill be presented for the Seniors py the Junior Class on April 9 in the ASHS gymnasium. I President, George Krichbaum Vice-President, Tom Webb Secretary, Jill Bumgarner Treasurer, Joanne Lisk Albemarle Teen Club Features First Dance The newly organized Albemarle Teen Club held its initial social function on Saturday night, March 27, from 8 until 12 at the National Guard Armory. Approximately 300 students from Senior High joined the new club sponsored by the city s Depart ment of Recreation, which is headed by Mr. Bob Amos. Mem bers and their guests are entitled to attend all Parties, dances and other functions that the club holds. In a meeting Friday, March 12, the Steering Committee for the club, composed of 17 members of the Senior Class and advised by Mr. Amos and Mr. Gibbs, asre^ on final plans for the big affair.^^ With a theme of “Set Sail ATC the atmosphere and surroundings 'Climb Every Mountain' Annual Congress Theme Albemarle Senior High School and Albemarle Junior High School will host approxim^ately 250 students at the Western District of North Carolina Student Council Congress which is to take place Friday and Saturday, April 2 and 3, at Albemarle Senior High School ^ Delegates are to arrive at ASHS between 11 o’clock a.m and 1 0 clock p.m. and will proceed to register in the Student Lounge. The highlight of the Friday afternoon session will be the keynote address dehvered by Dr. Amos Abrams of the State Department of Public Instruction. A banquet and dance will be held Friday night in which the theme of the congress, “Climb Every Mountain,” will be carried out through speeches and decorations. The Jimmy Brown Combo has been secured to provide the music for the dance which will be held — in the gymnasium from 8:00 un til 11:30. At this time the dele gates will retire to the homes of their hosts where they will spend the night. At 8:30 a.m. the delegates will reassemble at ASHS for the third general session, after which they will attend their second discussion period. At the fourth general ses sion which is to be held shortly thereafter, candidates seeking dis trict offices for next year will present their campaign speeches to the congress. The election of officers will be conducted by Tom Webls of ASHS, WDNCSCC vice- president. After the balloting has been completed, the newly elected officers will be installed by their predecessors. The congress will then be adjourned until next year. Leading this year’s congress (Continued on Page Six) were those of the beach and the ocean, places very close to the hearts and thoughts of most stu dents and reminiscent of summer vacation. Entertainment was pro vided by a live combo employed by the Teen Club for this occas ion. Refreshments were sold, and any profits were returned to the club treasury for use in other functions. As the date of the big dance approached, enthusiasm and an ticipation rose as cominittee mem bers were hard at work assuring the dance as a big success. It is the opinion of club members that this is the key step that will open the door for “more things to do in Albemarle” in the future. Ten Achieve Highest Honor Ten students achieved the High est Honor Roll for the fourth six weeks’ period. Seniors achieving this honor were Edith Johnson, Eddie Mauldin and Darrell New ton. Choral Groups Rate High In Contest The Special Choir and the Soph omore Chorus of ASHS received superior ratings in their respec tive classes, and the Senior Choir received a rating of excellent in the District Choral Contest held at Wingate College, March 5. The choruses were directed by Mr Paul Fry of the ASHS music de partment. Only six ratings of superior and 15 ratings of excellent were awarded among the 47 groups p>ar- ticipating. Singers in the contest came from 14 school systems in a seven-county area composed of Union, Cabarrus, Anson. Davie, Richmond, Rowan, and Stanly. Chairman of the event was Oli ver J.
