April I, 1966 THE FULL MOON Page 5 BULLDOGS SINK 60, CAPTURE WNCHSAA Cagers Conquer Valdese Tigers 60 to 42 Albemarle’s Bulldogs conquer ed the Valdese Tigers 60-42 at Kannapolis March 8 to become Western North Carolina High School Activities Association champions in class 3-A Basket ball finals for 1966. A large gold basketball trophy was awarded for their top-action performance. Early in the first quarter the Bulldogs gained a quick 3-0 lead, and the first quarter ended with the Bulldogs out in front 14-8 over the Tigers. At half-time the Bulldogs were in a 22-19 leading position. In -the third quarter, Albemarle captured 14^ points and Valdese got 5. In the final period the Bulldogs hit the bucket for 24 points while the Tigers managed only 18. From the floor, Albemarle hit on 17-of-44 shots for 39 per cent and connected on 26-of-37 free throws for 70 per cent. Valdese hit on 13-of-47 floor shots for 28 per cent and converted 16-of-20 charity tosses for 80 per cent. Co-Captain David Smith led Al bemarle scoring by copping 24 markers. He hit on five-of-11 floor shots and had an excellent 14-for-14 performance from the free throw line. Tommy Smith, Co-Captain, tal lied 14 points on six-of-16 floor shots and two free throws. Tommy Smith and David Smith were selected to the South Piedmont all-conference squad and the Piedmont all - tourney team. Ricky Russell gained eight markers and captured seven re bounds. Bob Overcash and Tom Webb each garnered seven points for the champions. A total of 12 Bulldogs saw ac tion in the championship game for Albemarle. Albemarle led 36-22 in the re bounding department. Tommy Triplett led the Val dese scoring by getting 23 points. After the championship had been gained. Coach Frazier stat ed, “We were so glad that we won the gold basketball but hope that it isn’t so long until we win another one.” Following the contest, Albe marle players went forward three times to receive trophies from W. C. Clary, secretary of the Western North Carolina High School Activities Association. Bob Townsend, Bill Trivette and Ricky Russell teamed up to get the regular season champion ship trophy for the Bulldogs, Tom Webb and Bob Overcash went on the court to carry the North-South Piedmont Tourna ment first-place trophy back to the bench; and Co-Captains, Tom my Smith and David Smith, join ed forces to receive the gold basketball trophy represer^ing the championship in the WNCHS AA finals. The bulldogs won 60-42. ff Rebels Fall56-47 In Tourney Finals Coach Frazier’s Bulldogs copped the championship of the North-South Piedmont Basket- Mus+angs Elimma+ed Coach Frazier’s Bulldogs grab bed a 52-49 victory in the basket ball encounter with the East Rowan Mustangs March 1 in the East Rowan gymnasium. Albemarle led in the first quar ter 15-13 over the Mustangs, but trailed 24-21 at halftime. Albe marle got 31 points in the final half compared to the Mustangs’ 25 and won by a 52-49 margin. The Bulldogs hit on 22-of-40 floor shots for an outstanding 55 per cent mark. Albemarle con nected on lO-of-23 free throws for 43 per cent. East Rowan hit on 16-of-45 floor shots for 36 per cent and converted 15-of-21 charity throws for 71 per cent. Tommy Smith hit on 12-of-16 floor shots and four-of-ten from the line to score 28 markers for the Bulldogs. David Smith tal lied 13 points on six-of-eight from the line. This marked the 13th straight victory for the Bulldogs. With this victory over South Rowan, the Bulldogs earned their chance to play in the Western North Carolina High School Ac tivities Tournament in Kannapo lis March 8. This marked the third straight year that Coach Frazier has guided his team to the WNCHSAA finals, only to come out runner-up in both pre vious tries at the championship. The Bulldogs hit on 20-of-41 shots from the floor for a per centage of 49%, as compared to a 31% mark for the Rebels. North Carolina Greyhounds Submit To Bulldog Strength Albemarle’s Fighting Bulldogs came through with a 39-38 vic tory mark over Statesville’s Greyhounds in the WNCHSAA semi-finals, March 4. Statesville held an early lead throughout the first quarters but the Bulldog-strength would not be defeated and third quarter ended with a close 27-25 lead in the Greyhounds’ favor. Albe marle racked up 14 points during the last period compared to the 11 made by Statesville. Ricky Russell made the es sential two points in the last seconds of the game by maldng good on a jump shot. ■From the floor, Albemarle hit on 15-of-40 shots for 38 per cent and connected on nine-of-21 free throws for 13 per cent; States ville hit on 15-of-45 floor shots for 33 per cent and on eight-of- 16 foul shots for 50 per cent. Statesville led in rebounds 35- 27. Ricky Russell and Tommy Smith had eight and seven re bounds to lead the Bulldogs in this department.
