Nominees, if accepted, must pay all expenses for the program. Ac ceptance comes from the Ameri can Field Service Office in New York City. Beth and Jane were asked to choose a country in which they would like to spend their summer, but if they are ac cepted, they can not be guaran teed this choice. Asta Hrolfsdottir is now living in the United States under the AFS program. Sandy Kelley, a former ASHS student, spent a sum mer in Turkey under the AF'S pro gram. Beth Burris and Jane E. Low der are nominees for the 1967 summer American Field Service Program. A committee of local citizens in terviewed three girls in addition to Beth and Jane; Sandra Cran ford, Jane Nicholds, and Mary Austin. All girls interviewed met the qualifications for the nomina tion. DE Students Enter Contest Myra Rothwell, district associ ate president of the Distributive Education Club, presided over the District Leadership Convention Oc tober 25 in Lumberton. The purpose of the convention was to elect district officers for the year and to compete in DE contests. Merle Britt ran for dis trict president; Myra Rothwell, for district secretary. Dwain Roache, a member of the nominating com mittee, helped to screen the offi cers. Sherry Burgess ran for DE- CA Sweetheart, and Carolyn Smith competed in the Job Interview Contest. Mrs. Sybil Brown, Albemarle’s DE co-ordinator served as chair man of the District DECA Sweet heart Contest. Susan Earnhardt and Carolyn Smith acted as Sen ior High’s two voting delegates. Student Begins Practice Here Miss Elizabeth Carol Keller, a student at Pfeiffer College, began her student teaching here Octo ber 24. For a period of eight weeks, she will be teaching busi ness subjects under the direction of Mrs. Gehring and Mrs. Chrisco. She will then complete her re quirements for graduation. Miss Keller’s home is in Dillwyn, Virginia. For the past several years, she has been attending Pfeiffer College where she is ma joring in the field of business ed ucation. Miss Keller has been involved in various activities throughout her school life. In high school, she served as president of Future Business Leaders of America, treasurer of the Beta Club, histor ian and reporter of Future Home makers of America, and a repre sentative of her Student Council association. In college, she was managing editor of the college annual and a member of the school newspaper staff. Upon graduation from Pfeiffer, Miss Keller plans to teach busi ness subjects in high schtx)!. The four students will be among 250 high school and college students who will sing selections from Durfula. The concert will take place Sunday, November 13, at 8 p.m., and will be directed by Dr. Lara Haggard, director of Midlan Symphonic Orchestra. Honor Society Elects Officers Bill Hartsell was elected presi dent at the first meeting of the National Honor Society Thursday, October 6. Other officers are Keith Wolf, vice president: Elicia Harwood, secretary; Linda Long, treasurer; and Rebecca Haire, chaplain. Shirley Clay and Rebecca Haire are transfer members of the Na tional Honor Society. Shirley trans ferred from the Roxboro chapter; Becky, from the Tampa, Florida chapter. These new members bring the total number of the Society to 10. Classes Debate Current Issues Debates are now taking place in Mr. Merritt's American Prob lems classes. Recent issues which have already been debated are the draft system and unidentified flying objects. Each debate consists of two 3- member panels and a mcxierator. The negative and affirmative panels are headed by chairmen who direct the presentation of their panel’s opinions. Each mem ber of the negative and affirma tive groups is allowed five min utes to present his argument. Af ter the views of panel members have been presented, each one is allowed a one minute rebuttal period. Following the rebuttal per iod, class members are given a chance to direct questions to either panel. A vote is then taken to determine the winner of the de bate. Mrs. Dickinson, dean, and Mr. Raglin, the head of the depart ment of data processing, at Al- verson Draughon Business College of Charlotte, presented a program on ‘‘Careers in Automation." A movie on the latest automotive equipment was shown. The officers for 1966-67 are Pa tricia Holt, president; Mike Ander son, vice president; Myra Whit ley, secretary; and Peggy Schooley, treasurer. Howard To Head Library Club Lynn Howard will serv'e as pres ident of the Library Club this year. The following were also elected to serve; Lynn Furr, vice presi dent; Nancy Almond, secretary; Paulette Balfrey, treasurer; Joy Schreyer, reporter. Several members of the Club planned to attend the South Pied mont District Convention which was held October 28 at Central Ca barrus High School, Concord. Mrs. Keith Harrison, faculty sponsor, accompanied the group. Bible Club Installs Officers Installation of officers was the highlight of the organizational meeting of the Bible Club, Leaders of the club are Sandra Yow, president; Mike Frick, vice president; Linda Robbins, secre tary; Pam Burleson, treasurer; Myra Whitley, reporter; and Deb bie Caudle, program chairman.
