Student Body Elects Leaders Teresa, David, Neesie, and Beth gather in the office for a trial run of future duties. Hartsell Wins Cannon Mills Scholarship Bill Hartsell, senior, has been named as a recipient of the Can non Textile Scholarship. The scholarship is one of four awarded each year by Cannon Mills to high school seniors who plan to study in the area of tex tiles at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. It is given in the amount of $1,000 per year for four years. No obligations are placed on the recipients of the scholarship. Other applicants from the school were Joe Crumpler, Ger ald Hatley, and Steve Brown. All of these were selected as hnalists among the forty-eight applicants. The sixteen finalists were given a tour of the mills March 27 and final interviews before the scholarship committee April 4 and 5. Whitley To Edit 'The Full Moon' Marlene Whitley will serve as editor-in-chief of the Full Moon for the 1967-68 school year. She is serving on the news staff this year. Other major appointments are as follows: David Mills, busi ness manager: Kitty Fisher, ad vertising manager; Pat Burle son, promotion manager; Jane Lowder, editorial editor; Alice Hinson, news editor; Sherry Lef- ler, assistant news editor; Kay Waddell and Jane Nicholds, co feature editors; Ronnie Burris, sports editor; and David Hall, assistant sports editor. The announcement of staff po sitions was made by Mrs. Nancy I. Gamewell Monday, April 3. Lowder Runs For District Council Office Jane Lowder, an outstanding junior, ran for the office of pres ident of the Western District of North Carolina Student Council Congress Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15. Shelby High School served as host for the delegates. Other delegates to the conven tion were Pam Medling and Fos- sie Webb, and unofficial dele gates were Edwin Sides and Da vid Hall. Jane’s campaign manager for the election was Mike Hewat from Hickory. Jane served as leader of dis cussion groups concerning for eign exchange programs Fri day afternoon and Saturday morning. Campaign speeches for the elections took place Friday af ternoon and voting, Saturday morning. The students were hon ored with a banquet and dance Friday night. Mark Mabry Chosen 'Boy Of The Year' Mark Mabry was selected as the Albemarle Optimist Club’s “Boy of the Year” at the tegular Tuesday night dinner meeting, . April 18, at the Central Metho dist Church fellowship hall. Mabry was chosen for the hon or from a group of young men representing each of the differ ent schools in Stanly County. The boys were judged in the areas of athletics, scholarship, civic activities, and religious ac tivities, and were interviewed by a committee headed by Mr. Bob Morgan. Dr. Charles M. Johnston of Charlotte, Optimist Governor of North Carolina, presented Mark with a trophy and a wrist watch. Mark has led an outstanding career while at Senior High. He has served as president of the Junior Class, Senior Class presi dent, marshal. Boy’s State dele gate, member of the National Honor Society, member of the Youth for Democracy Club, and Varsity Singers. Much of Mark’s time is occu pied with sports as a member of the baseball and basketball teams. This year he was select ed All Conference in basketball and was selected to play in the Marion Civitan Classic. As an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mark served this year as chairman of the city-wide Youth Breakfasts. David Hall, Teresa Wagoner, Neesie Huneycutt, and Beth Bur ris will serve as student council officers for the 1967-68 school year. David, who participates on the football, tennis, and track teams, has been serving as Junior Class Treasurer. He is a member of various clubs in the school and church. A cheerleader and an active member of the Boosters’ Club, Teresa is president of her home room. She will be a member of the journalism staff next year. Neesie, a member of the bas ketball team, is secretary of the Sophomore Class. She, too, has been chosen for The Full Moon staff. An AFS candidate, Beth is act ing as co-chairman for the prom decorations committee. She serves in the Senior Choir, Boosters’ Club, and S. O. Social Committee. The Friday elections were pre ceded by campaign speeches Wednesday, March 29. David Hall and Fossie Webb, whose campaign managers were Beth Eddins and Elicia Har wood, respectively, sought the office of president. Running for vice-president were Billy Freeman, whose campaign manager was Randy Burton; and Teresa Wagoner, whose manager was Bill Hart sell. Linda Carpenter, managed by Banks Garrison, and Neesie Huneycutt, managed by Steve Hicks, sought the position of sec retary. Beth Burris and Marlene Whitley were opponents for the office of treasurer. Beth Moose and Joy Schreyer were their campaign managers. These students were selected to run at the nominating con ventions Tuesday, March 21. Jane Lowder also sought the office of president, and Betty Fesperman ran for the trea surer’s nomination. Edwin Sides, S. O. president, and Ann Underwood, chairman of the elections committee, pre sided over the assemblies.
