Yellow Jacket's
Swarm Stopped, 8-3
The Bulldog baseballers tri
umphed over the Yellow Jackets
of Salisbury with a final score
of 8-3, March 29. This gave the
Bulldogs a 2-1 won-lost record
so far in the 1968 season.
The winning pitcher, Ricky
Russell, gave up only seven
hits, while he struck out ten
batters and walked seven.
In the first inning, Albemarle
scored one run. The run was
garnered on a walk, a stolen
base, and an error.
A double by Loeb, singles by
Doby and Hathcock, and a sac
rifice fly gained three runs in
the second frame for Albemarle.
The visiting Bulldogs made
one run in the third inning.
During the sixth inning, three
runs were scored by Albemarle.
Doby hit a single, Whitley dou
bled, and Lanny Mabry knocked
a home run over the left field
fence, 375 feet from home plate.
The home team, Boyden, scor
ed their only three runs in the
seventh frame. They were the
result of three hits, a walk and
a sacrifice.
In the field, the Bulldogs play
ed errorless ball; Boyden com
mitted two miscues.
With three for three, Doby
led Albemarle’s seven-hit attack.
Salisbury’s seven-hit offense was
topped by Swaim, with a two-
for-three batting performance.
Coach Jo Bogle’s girls’ basketball team carried the Bulldog Spirit high as they garnered a second
place in the South Piedmont Conference Tournament.
GREYHOUNDS COLLARED, 5-0 Kannaps Little Wonders Dogged
Junior Robert Lewis pitched
an outstanding game Tuesday,
April 9, as he twirled a no-hit,
shut out game (5-0) against the
Greyhounds of Statesville.
The win was good for making
the Bulldogs’ SPC diamond
standing 4-1, which put Albe
marle in a tie for second place.
No errors were committed by
the hosting Bulldogs, and the
Statesville squad made only one.
In the second inning, Russell,
who reached base on an error,
came in on a hit by Doby. Hits
were made by Eric Mabry and
Taylor in the third inning as
the Bulldogs garnered a single
ton.
A walk, a sacrifice, fielder’s
choice, and a hit made by Lanny
Mabry gave the Albemarle team
two runs in the fourth inning.
In the fifth inning, the home
team made a final run. Taylor
came in on a hit by Doby after
he got a hit and stole second
base.

Coach Merritt’s Bulldogs lost
to Asheboro in their first dia
mond skirmish by a score of
10-1, Friday, March 15.
The losing pitcher for Albe
marle was Robert Lewis, who
pitched three innings. Ricky
Russell took over for Lewis to
pitch the remainder of the game.
Albemarle’s lone run was
driven in by Donny Davis in the
top half of the fourth inning.
Johnny Little led the Bulldog
attack with two hits for three
times at bat. Eric Mabry got
the only other hit for Albemarle.
The winning pitcher for the
Blue Comets was Dawson,
twirling a three hitter.

The Bulldogs scorched the
visiting Kannapolis Little Won
ders, Friday, March 22, by the
final score of 6-3, in a baseball
skirmish at Wiscassett Ball Park.
Albemarle smashed through
with nine hits, as compared to
the Little Wonders with three.
Lanny Mabry started on the
mound for the Bulldogs, and
after three and one third in
nings, Robert Lewis took over.
The resulting win was contrib
uted to Mabry.
Eric Mabry went two for
three for the Bulldogs, followed
by Dick Loeb who went two
for four.
Both Albemarle and Kannap
olis made two errors as well as
pulling off a double play each.
Lexington
Crushed, 7-1
Bulldog baseballers journeyed
to Lexington, Thursday, April
11, to smash the Yellow Jackets
by a tally of 7-1 in a two inning
overtime.
At the end of seven innings,
the score was tied, 1-1. But in
the ninth inning the Bulldogs
rallied with six runs.
Robert Lewis went two for
four for a .500 batting average
to lead Albemarle’s attack. The
winning pitcher for Albemarle
was Ricky Russell, who gave up
only five hits. Also giving up
only five hits, Holcombe was
the losing pitcher for Lexing
ton. Walser got two hits for
Lexington.

Bulldogs Repel
Rebels, 4-0
Visiting South Rowan Rebels
were shut out (4-0) by the Al
bemarle Bulldogs Tuesday, April
2.
The South Piedmont Confer
ence victory was led by a left
hander, Robert Lewis, as he
twirled a great game from the
mound. Only three singles were
given up to the Rebels, and
Lewis struck out 10 batters
while walking only three.
Losing pitcher, Carriker, was
taken for nine blows, struck out
four batters and didn’t give up
any walks.
One run was made by the
home team in the first inning.
Eric Mabry got a single, stole
second, and came home on a
hit by Johnny Little. The same
thing was repeated by Mabry
and Little in the third inning as
Albemarle garnered another
marker.
In the bottom half of the
fourth inning, two Bulldogs
came across the plate. Loeb got
a hit and made it to second on
the play. Doby brought in Loeb
on a hit, and Russell got a triple
to score Doby.
Albemarle’s nine-hit offense
was led by Little (double and
single in three times-at-bat, in
cluding two R.B.I.’s); Loeb (two-
for-three): and Mabry (two-for-
four); and Russell (a triple in
two-plate appearances).
Two bases were stolen by
Eric Mabry for the Bulldogs;
Little took one.
TBACKSTERS
TRAVEL
The Bulldog tracksters have
traveled to three meets thus far
this year. Kannapolis hosted the
first, which was a five-school
affair, Friday, March 22.
Albemarle placed fourth at
Kannapolis, scoring just under
Thomasville. Mike Massey scor
ed for the Bulldogs in the high
jump. In the relays, the Bulldogs
placed third. Also scoring for
Albemarle was Gene Heame,
Mike Frick, and the late Billy
Howell.
At North Rowan Friday,
March 29, Albemarle suffered
and placed seventh place with
six points. The Bulldogs placed
fourth in relay events, while
Michael Manning placed fourth
also in the discus throw.
North Rowan placed first
with 48 points.
Albemarle captured third
place at Concord, Tuesday, April
9, with a grand total of 37
markers.
Concord placed first with 72
points and Statesville followed
up in second place with 58.
The Bulldogs placed second in
the 440 yard relay and obtained
third place in the mile-relay. In
the discus throw Michael Man
ning captured a deserving first
place.
Kenneth Kaiser also scored for
the Bulldogs as he charged for
second place in the 880 yard
run.
