Civic organizations and school
departments presented awards
privately to many students this
year.
For excelling in many school
activities, and especially, in the
area of art, Doug Hahn won the
coveted Student of the Year
Award from the Student Council
TTie student body selected Miss
Chicora Caughman as Teacher of
the Year. Miss Caughman is the
first recipient of such an award.
David Carpenter, active in
school activities and in his civitan
duties, capped the Civitan
Citizenship Award.
The Good Citizen and Good
Citizenships Awards, given by
the DAR organization, went to
Susan Andrew and Jeff Gaskin,
respectively.
Mr. Waddell presented the
Bricklaying Award to Avesta
Lilly.
Becky Jo Clark, recognized for
vocal talent, received the Varsity
Singers Award.
Betty Watson received the
Business Education Award and
the Crisco Award.
Carolyn Nance captured the
Sterling Silver Homemaking
Award. Recognizing the most
outstanding senior homemaking
student, Sally Dickson
Associated, Inc. gives this award.
Susan Chandler was notified as
the recipient of the Betty Crocker
Homemaking Award. Given by
General Mills, this award is given
to the senior girl who achieved

American Homemaker of
Tomorrow.” Susan ranked in the
top 25 in N.C. and in the top 99 per
cent in the nation.
The Rosalind Brooks Award
was presented to Bobbie
Swaringen. The recipient had to
be a senior who had excelled in
interest, skills, and knowledge in
the area of Home Economics.
This award was established by
Miss Betty Brooks, former Home
Economics teacher at ASHS, in
memory of her mother, Mrs.
Rosalind Brooks.
Jackie Lowder and Lorraine
Thompson, juniors, received the
awards for the most outstanding
Home Economics H Students of
the Year.
Reid Squires, Jeff Gaskin, and
Harold Overcash will travel to
Boys’ State this summer. These
students are chosen by the Lions
Qub, Rotary Qub, and the
American Legion.
Beth Kelley is the delegate to
the Qvitan Youth Conference in
Hendersonville, N. C.
Many students have received
scholarships to continue
education in their fields of in
terest.
Chris Smart received the
Women’s Club Scholarship.
Carolyn Hill is a winner of the
North Albemarle PTSA
Scholarship of one hundred
dollars.
Winner of the President’s
Scholarship to Mars Hill is Mike
Wyatt. Debra Madaris and Libby
Mrs. Jeneece Smith,
guidance counselor, received
the Crossroads dedication this
year for her many services to
the students of Senior High. In
a private ceremony, the an
nual class honored Mrs.
Smith. Mrs. Crowell and Mr.
Hawkins were special guests.
Adams won the Honor’s Com
mendation Scholarships of one
hundred dollars to attend Lenoir
Rhyne.
Gail Harrington won ap
proximately one hundred dollars
on the Health Careers
Scholarship.
Perry Eury and Steve Blalock
were two of the four boys in the
state to receive a scholarship to
the 21st annual North Carolina
High School Radio-Television
Institute, which will pay all their
expenses to the two week sum
mer program.

The End of The Line?
The line for diplomas will be
218 figures strong this year, 107
girls and 111 boys. The formation
starts Monday, May 31, at 8:00
p.m. at the Albemarle Junior
High School stadium. The
exercises will take place in the
Senior High auditorium, in case
of rain.
Hie Reverend Roger Tucker of
Central United Methodist Church
will introduce the evening’s
speaker, Dr. Jack Early, former
president of Pfeiffer College, who
resides in Washington, D. C. and
works with the American
Banking Association to secure
funds for private colleges.

Steve Blalock, son of Mr. and
Mrs. J. Frank Blalock, attained
the honor of Valedictorian of the
Qass of ’71. Steve serves as NHS
president and assistant editor of
the Crossroads. He is a member
of Modern Music Masters,
Science Qub, Radio Explorer
Post (WZKY), Law Explorers
Post, and Young Republican
Club.
He served as Student Lion for
the month of November. Steve
has received awards in history
and biology. He was Morehead
and Outstanding Teenagers of
America nominee. Steve also
attended Governor’s School.
Steve is a member of West
Albemarle Baptist Church and
attends Congregational Christian
Church fellowship.
Uiarles Burris, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Bob Burris, is class
Salutatorian. Charles is a
member of the NHS, Modern
Music Masters, and Law Ex
plorers Post. He is Science Club
president. Charles served as
Christmas float committee and
as mini-course content chairman.
Charles is a member of An
derson Grove Baptist Church.

tower,” as its motto. The violet is
their flower.
ITie Class of ’71 presented
gifts to the school in honor of
Miss Chicora Caughman and
in memory of Kenny Talbert.
A donation, honoring Miss
Caughman, to the athletic
fund and a plaque in memory
of Kenny are the gifts to the
school.
Kenny, who was a member
of the class, was killed in an
auto wreck in February, 1970.
He was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Talbert.
Miss Caughman, a math
teacher, will retire this spring
after 39 years of teaching. She
has served as Senior Class
sponsor for the past 24 years.
