The Full Moon Vol. 37 — No. 13 Albemarle Senior High, Albemarle, N. C. May 19, 1972 Seniors Show Talent The Senior Talent show Friday, April 27, displayed the Seniors’ ability to entertain in a one-hour, first period assembly. Masters of ceremony, Brian Garber and Jorge Moutous, in troduced the actors. The first act was a magic show performed by Johnny Edwards. Assisted by Stephen Hill, Johnny made a wallet disappear and milk disappear into a beanie. He also did several money tricks. The “Twelve Years of School” was the second act. Performers were Cindy Kelly, Martha Talbert, Marcia Carlson, Ginny Deese, Beth Kelley, Sharon Russell, Anne Harris, Martha Medling, Sally McLester, Teena Lewis, Wanda Vickers, and Mary Anne Crisco. A Barber Shop Quartet followed made up of Jeff Gaskin, Reid Squires, Mike Palmer, and Tony Morton, Mike Bunting accompanying on the piano, the group sang “Far Away Places”, “By the Moonlight”, and “Sidewalks of New York.” Mike Bunting performed “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” on the piano. Sharon Russell as “Rhoda Ra Ra” did a Laugh-In style initiation. A chorus of twelve singers sang accompanied by Mike Bunting. “People”, “A Time for Us”, and “Sounds of Silence” were their selection. Marie Coggins did a piano rendition of “Deep Purple.” Anne Harris sang a solo of “Moon River.” Susan Blalock played the piano for this act. Calvin Ingram impersonated a preacher and threw all evils in the river. Cindy Ross followed with a piano solo. The cheerleaders ended the program with a cheer. IT DE Throws Banquet The DE Employer-Employee Banquet, May 2, 1972, at Morrow Mountain featured tossed salad, steak, baked potatoes, rolls, butter, desert, and tea or coke. Following the meal Donnie Eddins opened the program. Larry Lunsford lead devotions. Buddy Harris lead the DECA creed and Susie Boysworth welcomed the guests and Mrs. Mollie Williams made a response to the welcome. Rodney Lee introduced the special guests and made a student introduction. MOONBEAMS Alpha and Omega The last day of school is May 29, leaving 87 days of summer vacation before we start again August 24. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! May 10 — Selection The DE class presented the skit “DE Dream”. Following the skit Robbie Lowder and Linda Mills presented the DE scrapbook. Donnie Eddins closed the program. Weathersbee Predicts Guest speaker at the last meeting of FTA, May 15, was Mr. Stan Weathersbee, principal of East Albemarle Elementary School. He discussed the possibility of a new FTA program to begin in the 1972-73 school year. This new program will be a one hour course. A member will be able to serve as a teacher’s aide for the school year at another school, such as Junior High or an elementary school. If a member chooses to participate in the program, he will receive credit for doing so. At this time it is thought that only seniors will be able to participate in this new program, but it is hoped that juniors might be able to participate, too. Cindy Ross, valedictorian, and Susan Andrew, salutatorian, have earned with hard work a rest in the shade. It's Time To Go The “Letta-Sweata” man will be back in Albemarle to speak to seniors and their guests at graduation ceremonies, Monday, May 29. Mr. Albert Long, Jr., a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, who spoke to Albemarle Senior High Students, October 29, 1971, impressed the Class of ’72 so much that the Senior Council requested that he be the graduation speaker. At 8:00 p.m., David Adams, Chief Marshal, will lead the seniors and speakers across the field of the Albemarle Junior High stadium to begin graduation ceremonies. Other marshals, John Baugh, Cathy Cheatham, June Fisher, Patti Hairyes, Myron Precincts Represented Precinct representatives were elected Thursday, April 27, during first period. From District One, Mike Pelt and John Bowen will be the senior and junior representatives, respectively. Marshals Drawn The Marshals for the 1972-73 school year are David Adams, chief Marshal, John Baugh, Cathy Cheatham, June Fisher, Patti Hairyes, Myron Harrington, Nona Prase, and Kim Woodruff. Eligible Juniors submitted their names and the seniors voted on them. Congrats Giriny Deese received the Neilson Russell Scholarship. Each school in the county nominated one boy and one girl for the scholarship. Down By The Lazy River The river cabin of William Hill was the site of the Senior Picnic Friday, April 28. Seventy seniors gathered to munch hotdogs and hamburgers, and to toss frisbees. The picnic lasted from 6 to 9 p.m. Mrs. Hatley, senior class sponsor, received a silver bon bon dish in appreciation from the Senior Class. Engraved on the dish was “Class of ’72”. Chaperones were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blalock, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hatley, Mr. and Mrs. Richard O’Guin, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Swanner, and Mrs. Henry Hill. Mr. Warren Hawkins, principal, also attended. Seniors planned the picnic. Serving on the food committee were Brenda Gay, Sally McLester, Joy Early, and Susan Blalock Helping on committees were Brian Garber and Lynn Cran ford. The editorial board of the Full Moon takes this op portunity to thank the students, faculty, and businesses who have helped us put out the paper this year. There could not be a paper without all your support. Senior representative from District Three will be Christine Garber. Patty Oettinger will represent the juniors. Lew Smith and Debbie Flowe will represent District Four. District Five representatives are Darryl Ellis and Cherylyn Adanee. From District Six, Lester Evans and Arlesa Daniels will be representatives. Curtis Paschold and Melinda Moose will represent District Seven; and Leonard Hawkins and Rosemary Almond will represent District Eight. This is a new type of student representation and, as stated by Reid Squires, president, it is hoped that it will work with more success than homeroom representatives. Arlesa Leads Off For Summer Arlesa Daniels, sophomore, has been selected for the Summer Leadership School, a 6 weeks session from June 11 - July 21 at Mars Hill College. The school’s main purpose is to develop leadership ability among high school students. Students attending the school will be discussing problems such as human relations, drug abuse, pollution, rebellion, and better use of leisure time. The basic approaches of the students to the problems will be through independent study, in terviews, visits, group activities, outside consultants, audio-visual materials, and self evaluation. Only one student was selected from each county to attend the summer school. All expenses will be paid by the Department of Public Instruction in cooperation with the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. Harrington, Nona Pease, and Kim Woodruff will seat the seniors and other invited guests and give out programs for the ceremonies. After the seniors and the audience sing the hymn, “God of our Fathers,” the reverend W. B. F. Blackmon, retired, will deliver the invocation. Selected seniors, directed by Mr. George T. Hauss will sing songs. Reverend Charles W. Easley, pastor of the First Lutheran Church of Albemarle will in troduce Mr. Long and he will speak to the seniors and their guests. After the graduation address, Mr. Charles W. Pickier, chair man of the Albemarle Board of Education will present the diplomas to each senior. Reverend Blackmon will deliver the benediction, and senioKS will file out to the traditional recessional, “Whitehall.” Mr. Hawkins, principal, will work with the seniors and newly elected marshals during the last two days of Maydaze and on Monday afternoon to perfect the graduation exercises. Leaders Have Class Junior and Senior class officers were elected May 4 during homeroom. Serving as officers for the rising Juniors are Mike Smith, president; Rosemary Almond, vice-president; Betty Gulledge, secretary; and Melinda Moose, treasurer. Senior class officers are David Adams, president; Debra Bryson, vice-president; Kim Woodruff, secretary; and Christine Garber, treasurer. In run-off, May 5, for the office of vice-president, Debra won, running against Roy Rogers and John Garrison. Try It! In a recent questionnaire taken among Seniors, course likes and dislikes came to light. An in teresting observation — the class of ’72 picked English as their most liked and disliked course. Second runner up to English as the least liked course was Senior Science. Following were French, Chemistry, Biology, Geometry, Algebra, Home Economics, ICT, and Physics. The ten most liked courses, in order of preference, were English, History, American Problems, Algebra, DE, Mechanical Drawing, Gym, Band, Bricklaying, and Biology.
