Final Days At Hand
Irelou Easley and Susan Wyatt will serve as Salutatorian and
Valedictorian in graduation exercises.
The graduating class of 161
will receive diplomas in
graduation exercises Sunday,
May 27.
Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy, Chancel
lor of North Carolina A&T State
University, will speak to seniors
and their guests.
At 8 o’clock p.m., Arlesa
Daniels, Chief Marshall, will
lead the seniors and speakers
into the Senior High auditorium
to begin the graduation cere
monies.
Other marshals, Steve Cro
well, Chuck Gaskin, Jenell
Hudson, Bess Knotts, Melinda
Moose, Melissa Moose, and
Crystal Waller, will seat the
seniors and give out programs
for the ceremonies.
After the seniors process to
the traditional “Pomp and
Circumstance,” the audience
will join them in singing the
hymn, “Holy, holy, holy.” The

School Efforts Rewarded
Many Seniors have received
scholarships to many schools
for next year. Susan Wyatt
received an Alcoa Scholarship.
Susan will attend the University
of North Carolina at Greens
boro. Kenny Ashcraft was given
an Alcoa scholarship to the
University of North Carolina at
Charlotte for $750 each year for
four years.
Sandra Pollard was awarded
two scholarships, the McNulty
and Littlejohn Scholarships
from Furman University. Bon
nie Chandler received the
Stanly County WMU award. She
was also given an Associate
Trustee’s Scholarship from
Wingate College.
Susan Huneycutt was award
ed an Alpha Delta Kappa award
in the amount of $100. She will
enter Appalachian State Uni
versity in the fall. Nona Pease
received the Rotary Club
Award for $500 and an Alpha
Delta Kappa Award for $100.
She will attend Appalachian
State University.
Melita Corriher received a
Presbyterian Scholarship for
$250 from First Presbyterian
Church. She will go to the
University of North Carolina at
Charlotte. Debra Bryson recei
ved the Stanly County Hospital
Auxiliary Award for $200 and a
Presbyterian Scholarship for
$250 from First Presbyterian
Church. She will enter the
University of North Carolina at
Greensboro in the fall.
Brad Perry received a full
scholarship to Millard Prep
School in Oregon. Mike Pelt
received an Honor’s Trustee

Boys’State Delegates Choseii
Tom Knotts, Bain Jones, and
Hal Ingram will represent our
school at Boy’s State at Wake
Forest this summer.
Shaver Garners Award
The Albemarle chapter of
DECA held its annual Em-
ployee-Employer Banquet,
Wednesday, May 16, at Morrow
Mountain State Park.
The banquet was highlighted
by Mrs. Brown’s presentation of
the vocation award and the
leadership award to Rene
Shaver.
Award for the amount of $750
each year for four years from
Pfeiffer College. He was also
given a Pfeiffer grant through
Cannon Mills for $500.
Diane Hatley was awarded a
scholarship to Campbell
College. Cathy Sinclair received
a music scholarship for $300 a
year for four years. She will
attend Mars Hill College. Mary
Emmons was given a Trustee
Scholarship for $100 from
Lenoir Rhyne College.
David Bryson received a part
athletic, part academic scholar
ship for $1100 from Appalachian
State University. Curtis Pas-
chold was awarded an athletic
grant from Appalachian State
University. Bobby Daurity
received an Athletics scholar
ship from Lenoir Rhyne
College.

Twenty-two seniors joined in
an effort to present the Annual
Senior Talent Show, Thursday,
May 17. Only seniors attended
the show.
Christine Garber, Terrie
Daughtery, Carol Cline, Carol
Fitzgerald, Susan Doby, and
Mary Emmons formed
ruff, June Fisher, Mary
Emmons, Susan Doby, and
Carol Fitzgerald ended the
show with a song entitled, “Six
In a Bed.”
David Adams, Senior Class
President, closed the show with
a short speech and presented a
chorus-line and kicked off the dozen red roses to Mrs. Hatley
show with a presentation the Senior Class,
entitled, “Shoeshine”.
In the next act, the audience
participated. Beverly Sanges,
Debra Bryson, Irelou Easley,
and Katie Cauble asked for
volunteers among the seniors.
Myron Harrington, Jimmy
Hesley, Charles Cooper, Curtis
Paschold, and Monty Canon
offered their services and
helped in a game called
“Grandma Went To Town.”
June Fisher and Terrie
Daughtery took over the show
next with a baton twirling
routine to the music of
“Pearly.”
“Oh Little Playmate” provid
ed the background music for a
“short” skit by Beverly Sanges,
Debra Bryson, Irelou Easley,
Ellen Still, Janet Ritchie, and
Katie Cauble.

ience between acts with the
problems of irregularity.
Brenda Burris, Kathie Neel,
David Mullinix, David Bryson,
and John Garrison acted out a
portion of the play, “Romeo and
Juliet” in the next act.
Robert Whitley, Nona Pease,
and Eleanor Gold formed a
group and sang, “Teach Your
Children”, and “Heed the Call.”

Cawthon, Personnel Manager
at Collins and Aikman, present
ed the awards to Bonnie and
Myron.
Collins and Aikman presents
awards to two students from
each school in the county on a
basis of scholarship, participa
tion in school activities and
good citizenship.
Bonnie and Myron were also
the recipients of the Dr. Madge
Gaskin and Dr. John Gaskin
Awards for athletes.
MMM Adds Five New Members
The Modern Music Masters
inducted five new members at
their annual dinner meeting,
April 17.
The five inductees are Lynn
Barrier, Melissa Hatfield, Hal
Ingram, Mary Jo Morton, and
Sharon Thompson. Hal is a
member of the Band, and the
others are in the Senior Choir.
Members select these persons
from among various Band and
Chorus members who are
outstanding in musical abilities
and scholastic averages. An A
average in music and a B in
other school work must be
maintained to be eligible for
membership.
These five passed initiation
by performing before the other
members. They formed a
choral group and sang, “I’ll
Walk With God.” The perspec
tive members were also
required to pass a test on the
Constitution and By-Laws of the
Society.
The Modern Music Masters
concluded their regular meet
ings with the election of next
year’s officers: Crystal Waller,
president; Jenell Hudson vice-
president; Lynn Snuggs, secre
tary; and Lisa Roberts,
treasurer.
Historian and Chaplain will
later be appointed.
Finally, Mr. Hauss, advisor,
commended the efforts made by
this year’s officers and termed
Reverend Roy Lockeridge of
the Main St. Methodist Church
will deliver the invocation.
Selected seniors, directed by
Mr. George T. Hauss, will sing.

Presbyterian Church will intro
duce Mr. Dowdy, who will speak
to seniors and their guests.
After the graduation address,
Mr. Charles W. Pickier,
chairman of the Albemarle
Board of Education, will
present the diplomas to each
senior.
Everyone will then sing, “0
God, Our Help In Ages Past,”
and Reverend Lockeridge will
deliver the benediction. Seniors
will then file out to the
recessional, “Whitehall”.

Present Concert
The Senior Choir and the band
presented their annual spring
concert Thursday night, May
24, in the auditorium.
The Senior Choir performed
first. Their selections included,
“Let the Song Be Begun,”
“America, Behold Your Des
tiny,” “One World,” “Carnival
of Melody,” “Consider Your
self,” “People,” “Come Satur
day Morning,” “Willow,” “By
the Time I Get to Phoenix,”
“P’or All We Know,” and “Kum
Ba Yah.”
An instrumental combo con
sisting of Crystal Waller, piano;
Jan Lefler and Lori Whitley,
guitars; Kristi Whitley, xylo
phone; and John Baugh, string
bass, accompanied the choir.
The combo later performed
“Goodnight, Sweetheart,” and
“All the Things You Are”
between the performances of
the chorus and band.
Robert Whitley, Nona Pease,
and Eleanor Gold also per
formed in a combo at this time.
The band was next on the
program. Among their numbers
were “Masque,” “Overture in B
Flat,” “Toccata,” “Mannin
Vein,” “Selections from Love
this year as one of the best Story,” with Irelou Easley and
ever in the clubs history. Old Deborah Kerr accompanying on
