Class Volume 44 —No. 6 ALBEMARLE SENIOR HIGH NEWSPAPER June 1,1979 Changes To Affect Senior High Next Year Dr. Brown Named New Superintendent The new school superintendent, who will begin his job on July 1, is Dr. William L. Brown. Dr. Brown graduated from Mooresville Senior High School, Mooresville, North Carolina in 1951. In 1969 he became an administrative assis tant superintendent in the Gaston County Consolidated School Sys tem. In 1970 he returned to his home town of Mooresville, N.C., to serve as an assistant superin tendent in the Mooresville City schools, becoming superin tendent in 1971. Dr. Brown has been active in the process of developing a posi tive performance appraised sys- stem for principles and super visors. More comprehensive courses will be offered to meet the needs of all ninth grade students at the senior high level. In addition to required English, math, science, and social studies courses, the vocational course offering will be expanded and better op portunities made available to students in art, music, physical education and athletics. The maturation level of the ninth grade group has increased VICA Members Excel Industrial Cooperative Train ing students from Senior High traveled to Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, March 29 to attend the District VI VICA skill and leadership con tests. Janet Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul H. Brown, won first place in the job interview contest. Janet, a junior, is secre- ta^ of the ICT-VICA Club and reigning Miss VICA. Melinda Gantt placed first in the prepared speech competition. Her topic was “VICA’s Incredible Potential.” Melinda is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Gantt and is treasurer of the Albemarle chapter of VICA. Other Albemarle ICT students attending the district meet were Mitzi L. Morris, Sheila Benton. Robert Hollis, ICT Coordinator, accompanied the students. May 2 the ICT students honored their employers in the combined Albemarle City-Stanly County Employer-Employee Banquet held at Harward’s Steak House. Students from each ICT and DE program in the city and county took part in the program. Paula Sides, VICA president, and Sid ney Hatley participated in the program from the Albemarle VICA chapter. Full Moon Wins Press Award For the second consecutive year, The Columbia Scholastic Press Association has awarded The Full Moon first place in their critique of school newspapers. The judging is based on a news paper’s content, coverage, writ ing, editing, design and display. The papers from January-June 1978 and September-December 1978 were judged, and out of a perfect score of 1000 points The Full Moon received 947 points. Some of the comments were very commendable, saying that “The Full Moon offers well-rounded coverage of sports,” “reporters reflect knowledge of their topic,” and “editing and copyreading seem to be handled by very con cerned staff, the work is ex cellent.” The staff received ex cellent ratings in the field of news stories, in-depth stories, feature stories, editorials and sports sto ries. The paper also received 40 special credit points for overall reporting and for the 1978 senior issue. Dr. Webb To Retire From Top Position DR. WILLIAM L. BROWN over the years, so these students are more compatible with senior high age students. The overcrowded conditions at the Junior High School will be eliminated, therefore giving the seventh and eighth graders a more flexible course offering and learning situation. Another change that is under consideration is switching the English course from nine week mini courses to a full year. In a recent poll the students appeared to be in favor of the mini courses. The School Board and state of ficials are still discussing the possible change. After thirteen years of serving as the Superintendent of Albe marle City Schools, Dr. H. T. Webb is retiring. Dr. Webb was born in Tarboro, North Carolina and attended Tarboro High School. Dr. Webb began working with the Albemarle schools in 1947 as a teacher and coach. He became principal of Albemarle Junior High in 1958, and later, in 1960 he assumed the position of principal at Albemarle Senior Hi^. In addition to being superin tendent, Dr. Webb participates in many civic clubs. He is a mem ber of the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Webb also belongs to various professional organizations. He is a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators, Amer ican Association of School Ad ministrators, Officer of Division of Superintendents, NCAE and Horace Mann League. Dr. Webb received an honorary Doctorate of Public Adminis tration at the Commencement Exercises at Pfeiffer College on May 20, 1975. He serves as both Deacon and Elder in the First Presbyterian DR. H. T. WEBB Church. Dr. Webb has been super intendent of the Albemarle City Schools since 1966. Publications Name ’79-’80 Staffs The 1979-1980 Crossroads and The Full Moon staffs have been announced. Editor-in-Chief of the annual staff is Karen Souther. Carla Perry occupies the position of co-editor. In the sports depart ment, Will Jolly fulfills the posi tion of sports editor. Carole Low- der takes on the tasks of special features editor while Linda Neel is the regular features editor. Susan Davis occupies the job of classes editor. Managing the business section is Ann Dennis’s tasks. Personnel editor is the job of Kathy Wagoner. In the camera department, Matoka Snuggs ful fills the position of photography editor. The new upcoming mem bers for the Crossroads staff are Mark Talbert, Tammy Dwight, Jennie Hill, Danette Hale, Eddie Snuggs, Mary Mullinix, Kim Cook, Mary Crotts, Tim Ellis, Jenny Hatley, Chris Freeman, Dale Harwood, Jane Smith, and Todd Hopkins. Pam Cox takes on the job of editor of The Full Moon staff. Sonya Mabe informs the students of ASHS through the news New Crossroads and Full Moon staff members will assume re sponsibility in August. department which she heads, with the help of her assistant editor Donna Laton. In the feature department, Beth Mabry handles the editor respon sibilities, and her assistant editor is Shannon Bowers. Sports editor is Tony Hinson and Christie Sasser is his aide. Shannon Bell and Lynn Rivers handle business matters as they head this depart ment. Exchanging newspapers with other schools is part of Mitzi Prom Sets Sail Dancing to the music provided by “Skyline”, the passengers of the Moonlight Cruise enjoyed themselves as the prom began. The Albemarle Junior-Senior Prom was held May 18 from 8:00 to 12:00 at Stanly Technical Insti tute. The hosts and hostesses for that night included Gwen Black- welder, Pete Smith, Kim Cook, Mark Hawn, Tammy Dwight, and Tim Ellis. Money raising projects by the Junior Council included dance concessions in November and December, all proceeds from the Homecoming dance, a T-shirt sale, and odd jobs such as wash ing windows. A doughnut sale was conducted in April, and this brought forth around $400. Decorations for the prom were similar to the “Love Boat” tele vision series. A rowboat filled with ice and a punch bowl in the center was used. A bartender was hired and served Coke, Dr. Pepper, or Sprite from the bar to the attendants. A mural was made and the picture background was planned by Ms. Staton’s art classes. A banner was hung across the front of Stanly Tech which exclaimed, “Bon voyage!” “Moonlight Cruise” passengers dance beneath the stars. Morris’s job. Eleven new stu dents will take part on the Journalism staf^ during the upcoming year. These include Lisa Holm, Gwen Blackwelder, Bryan Shumate, Shari Robert son, Lydia Williams, Frank Howard, Mark Crisco, Lori Thomas, Kenneth Russell, Paula Cox, and Flynn Richardson. Moonbeams HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN Summer vacation will begin on June 11. The students will return to school on August 24. OUT TO LUNCH The Student Lion for the month of May is Buddy Lowder and the Student Rotarian is Hal Mc Donald. THANKS!!! The Albemarle FBLA Chapter would like to thank everyone who participated in the March of Dimes Walk-a-thon, Bike-a-thon.
