Homecoming '93
By Michele Smith
Although the 1993 football season has come to a close, special moments will be remembered
forever. October 22 was by far one of the most memorable games of the year. School spirit and the
thrill of wmning were not the only feelings floating around the Bulldog stadium. It was the 1993
Homecoming and anticipation of the half time events filled the air.
As the band set the mood by softly playing "A Whole New World” the sponsors were escorted
onto the field. Each girl was hoping to be crowned Queen or Court as everyone impatiently waited
for the moment to arrive. First to be announced were the Junior Court members - Carmen I^d and
Tanya Gramling. Next, the Senior Court members were announced - Crissy Smith and Mary Jo
Austin. Finally the 1993 Homecoming Queens were recognized - Carla Cauble and Kari Andrews.
I went blank, I couldn’t believe it!” stated Kari. “It took me a second before I realized that I got it,”
said Carla,’! was looking around for the wirmer before I realized that it was me!” Both Kari and Carla
agree that they had no idea that they would be crowned Albemarle High School’s 1993 Homecoming
Queens. Congratulations to Kari and Carla and their court!
Invasion of the Flies
By L. Cox, K. Palmer, H. Smith, and
S. Homesley
Flies have invaded AHS. All Biology II
classes are doing many different experiments
with fruit flies. Under the sup>ervision of mad
scientist Doyle Shaw, students are persistently
studying the behavior and customs of flies. Not
only are the students crossing the flies to produce
new generations, but they also have to mate them,
give them penicillin, make medium (food), put
them to sleep, and seperate the males from the
females. Everyone has a different assortment of
flies. They must keep joumals of the flies every
day. Also, they have to get up at outrageous
hours to let adult flies out of the vials. With all of
this work, all biology students can think about is
flies. Good luck to Mr. Shaw’s classes. May
your grades be good!
Jeff, Will, and Mr. Shaw work on
Biology I! experiments.

ACS Say Goodbye to Two Board Members
By Shannon
In addition to Ron S wanner and Mark Mabry,
who were spotlighted in the October Full Moon,
the Albemarle City Schools are saying goodt^e
to two other school board members.
Mr. Rick Russell was a board member for
eight years. He believes that some accomplish
ments made while he was on the board were the
installation of air conditioning, window projects
in the schools, and the before school breakfast
program. Mr. Russell explains that the good
point of being on the board was knowing that he
asaboardmember helped a child or s taff member
realize his or her capabilities by providing the
best resources available to reach their goal. The
bad point was having to make hard decisions that
Homesley
did not always please each person involved. Mr.
Russell has really enjoyed working with his fel
low board members and the superior staff in the
Albemarle City School System.
Mr. Pete Clark was a member of the school
board for six years. The good points for Mr.
Clark were doing things for students and woridng
withothermembers. The bad point was not being
able to get enough money to start projects for the
improvement of our schools. Mr. Clark empha
sizes the fact that he enjoyed every minute of
helping students.
These two members will be missed but
many thanks are given to both for their faithful
contributions to the Albemarle City Schools.

The citizens of Albemarle have elected a new
member to the ACS School Board. He is Mr.
Steven Blalock, who graduated from Albemarle
High School, finished undergraduate work at
Duke University, and completed law school at
UNC-Chapel Hill. One interesting fact about Mr.
Blalock is that he worked at the ABC television
company in Washington, D.C. before he attended
law school. Yes, guys and girls, that is the chan
nel that you watch Monday Night Football and
General Hospital on. While Mr. Blalock was
employed there, he worked on the Watergate
issue.
Mr. Blalock believes there are four things im-
px3rtant for the school board. First, they should
focus on what is best for students. Second, the
board should do an extra good job of keeping the
public informed. Third, he would like to partici
pate in making plans for the future. Finally, he
believes the board should push for academic
excellence. Not only would Mr. Blalock like to
raise average test scores, but he would also like to
raise the top test scores.
Mr. Blalock lives in Albemarle with his family.
His wife, Linda, is a nurse practitioner, and his
son, Thomas is eight years old and a second
grader at East Albemarle Elementary. Mr.Blalock
would like for students to feel that they can
contact the school board if they want to without
being scared. Mr. Blalock feels that your ideas
are important so he hopes to visit schools and be
available for students.
