Seniors Receive Money

As seniors are filling out applications and
touring various colleges of their choice, college
administrators are digging through stacks of tran
scripts and scholarship applications to find the
right students to receive their scholarship awards.
Many AHS students have already been notified
of these achievements.

ing Fellows Scholarship to Elon College. This
allows him $5,000 a year, with Elon paying the
difference of his tuition. After he graduates,
he must teach for at least four years in North
Carolina to pay back the scholarship. Robby
Bailey has a full scholarship to the Air Force
Academy. Hannah Oettinger has been awarded
the Hankins Scholarship to Wake Forest Univer
sity. This will pay almost 75% of her tuition
andfees. Kristi Kirkpatrick and Melody Buiwe
will both be receiving a Trustees scholarshipfor
$12,000 to Wingate College. In addition, they
received the McCurdy Scholarship to Wingate
along with Tennelle Wilhelm, Michele Smith,
Carla Cauble, Charm Miller and Kim Thomas.
Leigh AnneMauldin received aNursing Fellows
Scholarship to UNCC paying $5,000 a year.
Scott Anderson will receive the C&A Scholar
ship to the school of his choice. S arah Snodgrass
received a Presidential Scholarship, the Alumni
Scholarship, and a 5125 math team scholarship
to Pfeiffer College. Dayshel Harwood received
the North Carolina Association of Rescue and
Emergency Medical Services Scholarship. This
allows her $3,000 a year, $12, 000 in all to the
college of her choice, Salem.
Congratulations to these students and to all
others who received or will receive scholarships
in the future. Hard work really does pay off.

On March 28. twenty eight juniors were tapped
in to the National Honor Society at AHS. These
students have shown outstanding academic tal
ent. To be inducted into the National Honor
Society, students must have visible qualities of
character, scholarship, leadership, and service.
Nominated students were required to have a 3.5
GPA and were fully evaluated by teachers. The
chosen twenty eight were not told of their achieve
ment until they arrived at school that Monday
morning. Everyone’s parents received letters a
week early so they could be at the school for
the ceremony. The twenty-eight students in-
ducted are Kellie Pahner, Heather Smith, Jeremy
Clark, Alma Norwood. Dale Hopkins. Catherine
Weber. Marcus Ingram, Aleshia Lowder. Ane
shia Ridenhour, Deneshia Ridenhour. Will Lisk,
KevinCarter, LeeTimberlake, Michael Carrick-
hoff, EllenBurleson, Kesha Lowder, Molly Tripp,
Teresa Pleasant, Megan Hamilton, Michael
Greene, Shannon Homesiey, Nong Moua, Amy
Morehead, Alyson Almond, Steve Bost, Andrew
Burleson, Stephen Allen, and Marti Sullivan.
These students will all be excellent representa
tives of the school. To prove their capabilities,their
first activity will be serving as waiters/waitresses
at the Academic Awards Banquet for seniors.

Four to Rttend Gouernor's School

In March, Governor's School nominees went
through trial and tribulation auditioning and
writing essay questions. For four AHS students,
the hard work paid off. The three academic
nominees were all selected to attend Governor's
School for six weeks this summer. Marcus
Ingram will be studying and staying at Salem
College in Winston Salem. Nong Moua and
Steve Bost will be studying at St. Andrew's
Presbyterian College in Laurinburg. Marti Sul
livan was inducted for choral music. She will at
tend Governor’s School at St. Andrew's Presby
terian College in Laurinburg. Congratulations to
Marti, Steve, Nong, and Marcus. This honor is
Marti, Nong, Marcus, and Steve are weU deserved,
relaxing before their studious summer.

On May 26, AHS will hold its eighth Aca
demic Awards Banquet. This banquet is in
recognition of those who have achieved aca
demic success throughout high school. Fourty-
one seniors will be honored. These students have
to be either a member of the National Honor
Society, a Presidential Academic Fitness Award
winner, or a North Carolina Scholar.
The Academic Banquet will be held at 7:00
P JVI. at Central United Methodist Church. First,
there will be a catered dinner for students and
parents. This will be followed by the awards
ceremony. Some entertainment will follow,
provided by the participants. The Junior Na
tional Honor Society will serve as waitresses and
waiters for the seniors. Local businesses have
graciously donated money for the banquet
Congratulations to all those who will receive
honors and awards at the banquet.
