Aleshia Lowder, Marcus Ingram, Lilly Cupino, Kevin Carter, Amy Miskell, Kendra Whittington, Kara Blalock, and Eric Lowder, with the guidance of their supervisor, Mrs. Grigg, have dedicated numerous long and hard hours to expanding their minds. Practicing every Wednes day after school, they answered a variety of questions and brainstormed certain subjects and managed to learn more than they thought pos sible. On Saturday, February 4, the Quiz Bowl participated in a county contest at the Stanly County Public Library. All morning, they fought hard and thought well to come out as the county champs. In the end, they did triumph and received a trophy for their first place finish. On March 18, Albemarle’s Quiz Bowl team will travel to Concord High School to comp>ete in another competition. Do you think seatbelts are only neces- *ary when you will be traveling for a long j)eriod lime or when you will be traveling at excessive Speeds? Well, think again. Seat belts should be "'Ofn at all times. It is a proven fact that most car ^ecks take place within twenty miles of the ome. To find out just how many of their fellow ulldogs drove safely, the BADD Club held a Seat belt survey on students at AHS on February Club members filled out a survery form Homesley saying how many students arrived at school wearing their seatbelts. After studious watch ing, it was estimated that 86% of Albemarle students wear their seatbelts while driving or riding in a car. The BADD Club sent in their survey results to the Governor s Highway Safety Commission. The club will receive S500 to spend on prizes for people who are buckled up the next time they take a survey. So start buck ling up for safety and you may win a prize for your diligerice. In honor of our winning 1994 football season,the band will be selling a realistic representation of all aspects of AHS winning football season: fans, football players, cheerleaders, and the band. $31.80 each This painting may be purchased from any band member. School as a Career: Students Aspire to be Teachers by Shannon Homesley Towards the end of the school year, all seniors who are planning on attending college search long-and hard for any possible scholarships that can help with college tuition. One such scholar ship is the Teaching Fellows Scholarship. Every year, any student who aspires to be a teacher can apply for this scholarship. This year, Tori Wilson, Alyson Almond, Marti Sullivan, Kevin Carter, and Ellen Burleson all decided to apply. The first round was to write an essay and have an in-school interview with teachers and well known citizens of the community. After all this strenuous work, the applicants had to wait to be notified if they advanced. Luckily, Kevin and Ellen received the letternotifying them of their advancement. Then, Kevin and Ellen traveled to Charlotte for another interview which is the deciding factor to whether or not they receive the scholarship. TTiey should benotifiedby the beginning of April. If awarded this scholarship, students will receive $20,000 total for all four years of college. To pay this scholarship back, recipients are expected to teach for at least four years at a state supported public school in North Carolina. Congratulations and good luck go out to Kevin and Ellen who want to be our kids future teachers. Kevin and Ellen hope to Improve educa tion with their teaching ability. New Educafors Arrive ai /4HS by Johnny Caudle The foreign language department had added a new teacher. Mrs. Gayle Brinson has joined the AHS faculty and is now teaching Spanish I. Mrs. Brinson graduated from East Carolina University, where she received ad B.S. degree. She has been teaching for twenty three years and has held positions at West Craven High School in New Bern and Hickory High School. Mrs. Brin son enjoys spending her spare time reading, cooking, and going to sports events. She espe cially likes baseball. In the “what’s your favorite cateogory,” Mrs. Brinson enjoys all types of music including everything from Mozart to Garth Brooks. Her favorite food is pasta and her favorite movie is “Gone With The Wind." Wel come to AHS, Mrs. Brinson. In January, after 35 years of teaching, Mrs. Morgan retired from hear position here at AHS. Mr. Matthew Roth took her place, teaching Algebra A, Algebra B, and Geometry. Mr. Roth graduated in 1991 from Guilford College with a B.A. in Math. He had taught at Western Guilford High School in Greensboro and atTanapag Elementary School on Saipan, a small island in the Pacific near Guam. Mr. Roth is a big lacrosse fan and has coached the sport on the high school and college level. Mr. Roth describes himself as an energetic, friendly, and easy-going person. In his spare time, he enjoys playing with his yellow lab and his three cats. He also enjoys camping and hiking with his wife.
