MARCH 1997 THE FULL MOON PAGE 4 Bulldog Sports EDITOR : RUSTY STORY Efird Makes a Splash at States by Heather Freshly David Efird, a member of AHS's first swim team, has greatly excelled in his swim ming events. When he failed to make the basketball team in ninth grade, David began swimming at the YMCA, figuring he could excel in that particular sport. Soon after David joined the Rowan Aquatic Club. Since the sum mer of '95, David has competitively been in volved in swimming. In this year s regional meet, with a record time of 1:01.45, David placed first in the 100 yard breaststroke and eightinthelOOyardfreestyle. On February 15, the state swim meet was held at Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Once again David placed first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.87, just .005 seconds slower than his rec ord lime of 1:00.82. Along with the honor of being best in the state, Dav id has been named as a YMCA All American swimmer. The next step for David will be this summer at the Junior Olympics. Congratulations to David on his extraordi nary swimming achievements! David Is ready for action! As we look back on the year we remember that certain athlete or athletes who gave an extra effort when the team needed it most. The last group of “Best of the Best” athletes for the winter ^oorLihave been chosen for March. Men’s Varsity Basketball- LeQuan Robinson was chosen due to the effort he gave day in and day out. Robinson, a junior, doesn’t see much action in the games, but makes the big guys on the team better eviry day in practice. Women’s Varsity Basketball- Tammy Dorman was a great scrap player for the Dogs this year. She was a great rebounder for the team this season and will be an important asset to the team for the next two years. Varsity Cheerleading-Allison Hudson and Erin Nothing tut Net!!! by Bo Andrew The 1996-97 junior varsity boys' basketball team will be remembered as one of the greatest JV basketball teams in AHS history. The team was the first JV basketball team ever to have an undefeated season (at least as far back as anyone here can remember). One of the main reasons for the team's success was their coach, Larry Johnson. Coach Johnson gave his team the freedom they needed to create plays and was still able to main tain discipline. He was a very positive influence to the young team. He stressed the fact that there is no “I” in " team." If one of the players on the team got in trouble, then everyone had to run at the end of practice. The Bulldogs destroyed their opponents by utilizing the fast break. Because of the team’s tremendous athletic ability, they out ran their opponents in transition. When asked about his team's undefeated sea- son, Ben Lisk said, “The coach gave us the free dom we needed to show.our skills, and as a result, we were 20-0. We could not have been so suc cessful without Coach Johnson. He is the most positive person I have ever meu” Before each game Coach Johnson would tell his team,’! have no doubt we will win. It’s just a matter of by how many. But you can’t take these guys lighdy or they will cut your butts.” When asked about Coach Johnson’s positive influence on the team, Trellis Edwards said. “He gave us the freedom to call the plays we wanted. He was incredibly positive in everything we did. He trusted us, and we trusted him." As a reward for the team’s success Coach Johnson is taking his players to a Charlotte Hornet's game. Congrawlations Bulldogs! "Best of the Best” by Rusty Story Thewintersportsseasonhascometoanend. Mauldin were the capons for both the baskeiMl .... .h. v,.^r we remember that and footbaU squads. They provided great leader ship over the last four years. J. V, Cheerleading- Brooke Gregory moved back to Albemarle before basketball started and was a great addition to the spuad this season. Men’s J.V. Basketball- The whole team de serves this one. They went 20-0, and they didn’t get beat either. Women’s J.V. Basketball- Allison Horton was a great offensive player this year on a team that competed with the top teams in the YVC. Men’s Wrestling- Dee Cole and Michael Den nis were the only two wrestlers from Albemarle to make the state tournament. Varsity Swim ming- David Efird is a state cham pion. What else can you say? The 1996-97 J.V. Men’s Basketball Team The Spring Fling by Rusty Story These athletes represent the best of the best for winter sports. The winter sports are over and the spring sports are full speed ahead with their practices. Sports starting on February 12th were men’s baseball, J.V. baseball, men’s and women’s track, women’s softball, men’s tennis, and golf. I will give you an idea of what to look for when you go to watch these athletes. Men’s Baseball- This is a team that is returning all starters and players. That could make for a great year if these guys keep their heads on straight. They have a pitching staff with a lot of experience. This team plays solid defense and hits the ball well, which will pay off for the team this year. J.V. Baseball- This team has a lot of pressure on them. Both the J.V. football and basketball teams went undefeated this year. The freshmen class has a lot of talent to go along with the expcriencc of the sophomores. If they learn to play well with each other; they could possibly make a clean sweep in J.V. sports for the guys this year. Varsity Track- They have had a large number of athletes come out to run this year. It is always good to have an abundance of people on the track team. With a great commitment from thes* people it could make for trouble in the YVC. Women’s Softball- These girls are making * huge transition from slow pitch to fast p>^^ softball. A couple of the girb have played fa*^ pitch, but this will be a tough change for othtf^ whohaveneverbeenexposedtothisintense 1®'^ of softball. Time and experience will be the kcj for this team’s success. Men’s Tennis- This team has three of its top returning from last season. They have a lot of experience, but most of the conference tcaH^ face the same problem with the lack of ence. With alotofeffort, theycan play with w body in the conference. . Golf- Bo Andrew leads this potential state qu* ^ fying team. Primarily a team of juniors sophomores, the team looks strong for come. After finishing sixth in the sute last y the team hopes to make it back to Chapel ^ with the intent ofasuie championship. Co*c'’ ^ Andrew has a number of experienced well as “^me r.cwc. :; Loos for team ti be comv'ciiti'c ,r= c. cry
