Working on the Chain Gang National Honor Society Inducts Thirty Members
by Kelly Rakes
As the year comes to an end, the school board and the parents are making numerous changes
in next year’s curriculum and dress. The students tend to agree that a dress code is defimte y
necessary so some students do not feel inferior to others. Parents and teachers feel the *ess code
will help students focus on their studies and extracurricular aclivilies instead o eac o er. os
students feel like school is already a prison and why not wear uniforms that consist o strippe
shirts with your school ID number tagged on the back. Most students feel that e ress c e i
a WONDERFUL idea so they can focus only on their work. Along with the new uniform, ars
will be put on every window and students will be required to wear a tobaggan cap to further make
everyone look alike. There is also talk of changing the

AHS is undergoing numerous changes for the
upcoming 97-98 school year. Along with inte
grated learning and block scheduling, the school
board is offering a variety of new electives for
grades 9-12.
After a number of board meetings and heated
discussions. Mr. Weiker has been chosen to teach
Ebonics as asecondlanguage. The new language
went under extreme controversy and scrutiny,
but the board believes the course will broaden the
horizons of African American students as well as
other ethnic backgrounds while introducing the
next American language.
Another addition to the 97-98 curriculum is
race car driving, which will be taught by Mr.
Blalock. A few years back Mr. Blalock attended
a special and very expensive course on race car
driving and has decided to spend his energy on
sharing his driving wisdom instead of teaching
P.O.T., physical science, chemistry, and physics.
However, the class does have certain stipula
tions: one must have a clean driving record,
maintain a 3.6 GPA,and pass strict physical and
mental examinations.
Mrs. Hathcock has also agreed to stop teach
ing Honors English and share her skill of podium
balancing. Her class will only hold nine to ten
students, so get your registrations ready!
The curriculum guide is still undergoing
numerous changes and the board plans to add
more entertaining electives, such as bird watch
ing, underwater basket weaving, hand bells, ballet,
paper making, and yoga. Next year is sure to be
filled with fun and excitement with the new
additions to AHS, but be sure to watch out for
Mr. Blalock and his driving students and Mrs.
Hathcock's balancing act.
