Hov/ Highlands Is Run
This town of Highlands, although
very small, is incorporated. It is
run by the Mayor, five men, and the
cooperation of the people. The
five non are: Messrs, J. D. Bur
nette and Joe Reese, who are on the
street cor.imittee; S. L. McCarty,
A. Hays, a.nd J. E. Potts, v;ho arc
on the light and water cominittee.
The mayor votes when one or more
persons are absent from a meeting
and in case of a tie. But v/ith
five •:iembors on the board, ties can
be avoided.
The Public Utilities help to r.ake
Highlands ruji. The water cones
from \7hat is called **The Houston
Springs.*' The v;ater is so enclosed
that neilther man nor beast can got
to it. The water is so pure, I am
The v;ater system ^ould bo imx^roved
by having larger pipes, but at
present we are unable to get them.
The wster, also, is so soft that
money can be saved by not having
to buy so much soap. V/e certainly
get a large economic break there.
The lights, are something v;hich
also make Highlands run. As I
consulted Mr. Jordan, he said that
Highlands got power from three
places; Hn*ghlands, Han t aha la, and
Glenville, and that consecuently
we were out of pov;er at no time.
The disposal of garbage is a
very efficient service, because
the germs are destroyed by burning
it, \!e are thankful for the trucks
that pick up the garbage to benefit
us and the tovm also. But, person
ally, I think that it v/ould be
better if the garbage v;ere carried
farther out of town to be burned.
Highlands would be helped very
much if there were some all-time
industry employing numbers of v;ork-
men such as a furniture factory
and other factories using wood,
perhaps a toy factory.
This town has a police force
consisting of two men: Chief Clin
Dr^’-i^ian, an assistant Frank Crane,
and a highway patrolman, I!r, Jack
Lunsford,
Because people from some states
think Highlands is very nice, they
come in the summer on a vacation.
This affords the people around
Highlands v/ork in home construction.
The sewage system is not as good
as it should be, because of lack
of material and unlevel ground.
Most of our sewage runs into Mirror
Lcike.
The soil is very suitable here
for grov/ing vegetables and some
fruits.
The money which people get for
v;orking for tourists they can use
to send their children to school
for an education. V/e hope we are
going to get a new school building
as scon as possible,
I think that it v/ould bo good to
