On April 13, 1962 the
president of our Student
Council received a letter
from the Student Council
and Traffic Safety Com
mittee of Myers Park Hi^
School in Charlotte. The
letter was concerned ylth
a suggestion of a way that
teenagers can cooperate
with the state wide comi- •
pai^ to prevent traffic
fatalities in the state
without making it necessary;,
to move the age limit for
driving up to 18.
The suggestion proposed •
that we students of West ■'
Montgomery follow the lead >
of Myers Park by drawing
up a petition to be seat toj
the North Carolina Traffic
Safety Council offering the^
following recommendations:
1. That the state of ;
North Carolina continue to
issue regular drivers
licensed to boys and girls
at the age of sixteen.
2. That between the
ages of sixteen and eighteeji
on receiving the first mov
ing traffic violation and
conviction, the driver
would automatically go on
driving probation. ’

dollar prize. Several
other seniors from West
entered this contest.

In talking with our
fellow students, who have
already received numerous
traffic tickets, they, with
out exception, said if the
above proposal had been in
effect, they would have been
more careful.
We all want to keep our
license, but most important'-
,we want to stjiy alive.
These petitions have been
circi£Lated in the homerooms
and have been sent, along
with a letter stating the
four proposals, to the
Safety Council in Raleigh.

to take this course.
