Five of West Montgcmery's Be-ta Clutr meiribers attended the North Carolina Beta Club Convention at Raleigh on April 6 and ?• ^he five members were Sue Ingram, Marilyn McMillan, Nancy Helen Bruton, Ls^rry Saund-? ers, and Roger Sanders. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Keith Staith. Mr. Smith is sponsor of West's Beta ^lub. The group arrived at Raleigh at approximately k p.m. and registered for the Convention. The first as sembly, held at the Memorial Auditorium, began at 7 p.m. Friday evening. The keynote address of the evening was given by Tom Byers, State President, I961-62.A .‘tsa« ent show was also held that evening. In the show the Franklin ^ounty Clubs took first place in the skit division with Wagram taking second place. First place in the spot division was taken by Pembroke while Liberty came in second. The second general as sembly began at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. New clubs were recognized as well as clubs achieving outstanding goals. After this assembly the group was divided into conferen ces. The conferences were as follows: Presidents and Vice Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers, Projects and Plans, and the Organ ization of Junior Clubs. During this Morning session the voting poles were open and the groups elected the president, vice-president, and secretary for the year ±962-63. The new elected officers were Steve Bums, president. East Mecklenburg; Pat Griffith, vice-presidea t, Marion; and Donna Vierson, Ahouskie, secretary. The third general as sembly was twin banquets held at the S. & W. Cafe teria Ballroom and the Virginia Dare Ballroom at the Hotel Sir Walter. A dance was held afterwards. Saturday afternoon the Beta members were able to attend the State Science Fair ' at Chapel Hill, the Engineer's Show at State College, as well as see the sights at the Capital. NSW MEMBERS Thirteen new members have been invited to join West Montgomery's Beta Club. The new members receiving invitations are as follows: Elaine Byrd, John Hodge, Gene Pridgen, Larry Saun ders, Marsha Armstrong, Blanche Capel, Martha Thro wer, Ellen Highsmith, Rog er Sanders, Becky Birkhead, Linda Blunders, Patricia McLoud, and Carol Ann New som. To receive an invita tion the new members must have had a 92 average or above at the end of the first semester this year as well as during previous high school years. An installation ceremony will be held un May 3^ for the new members as well as for old members since West Montgomery will be re ceiving a new charter this year. Mr. R. B. Hellams, State Director of Beta Clubs, will be present for the ceremony. The Beta club has been making plans'for possible projects to undertaJke dur ing the remainder of this year. The club is in the process of becoming affil iated with the national clut CHORUS CONCERT On April 12th, 1962, the West Montgomery Chorus gave a concert at East Montgo mery. The chorug,, accom panied by Mrs. Elizabeth Wright and Mr. Bill Snead, left for East about 11:30. Upon arriving at East the members of the chorus as sembled into the bandroom, awaiting the bell for lunch. Aft^r .lunch the chorus went into the gym for last min ute practice and instruc tions. After the devotion al, the chorus presented several sacred songs, among them were "God So Loved the World," "Build Thee More Stately Mmisions," and "Create in Me a Clean Heait, 0 God." Following a piano solo by Sue Ingram, the chorus changed the pace by singing some of the more popular songs. Some of them were "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Tea For Two," "The Desert Song," and'"Thjs is My Country." Wanda Watkins and Katie Belle Poe sang the duet "If Dreams Came True." accompanied by Claudia Blske. After the proga?am Mi*. Autrey, the principal of East Mont gomery thanlted the group for their program and stated "You have represented your school well." In the near future the East band will present a program here. The students at West Montgomery welcome our three new students. They are Linda and Ann Hilton, frxDm Durham, and Eddie Holt, from Troy. April 23, Linda Parnell’s birthdate, was left out of the April birthdays. The staff apologize^s. It was my mother who made me realize how noisy and gadget laden the modem home has be come . One night she sat bolt upright in her chair and ask ed, "Ttat just stopped?^
