Pa?e 10 yj ^ \ t \ Girls’ Basketball Coach Fred Brady, at his weekly press conference, discussed his team and the coining season. He stated his girls "would do better" this year. That is more readily understood if the record of last year’s squad is considered (0-21). Brady further stated,"This team has more speed. Play ing at home this year will also help." When asked about the "roving player" rule change which states that each team shall have a roving (May travel on both ends of the court) guard and forward, Brady said, "This may af fect us. 'The first games will be confusing." There is no back court ball in i^irls’ basketball and this year it is legal to slap the ball from the hands of an opponent, Brady remarked that tjoretta Gray at guard and Oiane Thompson at forward are showing up well,Fresh man Barbara Holt was com- laended. When asked who would hold down the"roving" position he said it would probably be Gray and either Thompson or Linda Wallace. He is also working with Nancy Bruton, Debbie East, and Sharon Batten. The 1952-63 West Montgomery Girls* Basketball squad consists of four freshman, four sophomores, four jun iors, and three seniors. Tri-captains elected re cently were the senior mem bers: Sarah Ingram, Nancy Bruton, and Loretta Gray. Coach Alan White of the boys' group announced he is "really pleased with the improvement which has been He says, "There a definite ira- since beginning am well satis- shown. " has been provement work and I fied." White was reluctant to name outstanding individual stars. He did remark that "as far as shooting accur acy goes, Charles Bruton and Charles Crouch seem to be best. From what I have been able to observe. Gene Pridgen and Jim Harris are best on defense," White further acknowl edged that he was "very unfamiliar with the con- - ference" and would make no predictions. "I don’t know what the teams have back or what they lost, as far as I’m concerned, any body can win." This year, of the dozen carried on the varsity, two are seniors, four are jun iors, five are sophomores, and there is a freshman (for variety.) Seniors Fincher Jarrell and Jim Harris were chosen cap tains by their teammates. J. V, Preview Coach Bill Merritt, leader of West’s vaunted Junior Varsity basketball squad, was very optimistic at his weekly press lunch eon, He would not go into detail but gave the im pression that a satisfac tory record would be com piled this year. He de finitely stated, "We plan to win. We have ball play ers who are looking pretty good. They hustle real well." Merritt, who along with Nelson Black of the Indus trial Arts Department, works with both the boys’ and girls’ teams, had words of praise for the female athletics. He expounded, "They are shaping up,look ing real good. Shaping up real good. We have some fine ball players," He ad mitted that the "roving player" rule was "confus ing to the girls and pretty complicated." Merritt said that the schedule had been set and that the games probably would be played at night although, on thispoliit,, he was vague. He said that no captains had been se lected by either team, but this would probably be done later. ( continued from page 3) branches).
