HOMECOMING FESTIVITIES
SUCCESSFUL
SAUNDERS PRESENTS
SCIENCE PAPER
Larry Saunders, senior,
was selected to present a
paper cn his science pro
ject last week at one of
the ten Science Youth Con
gress held in the United
States. The Congresses are
sponsored by the National
Aernautics and Space
Administration and by the
National Science Teachers
Association, The ten Con
gresses will be held at
NASA headquarters through
out the United States* The
nearest one to North Caro
lina is at Hampton, Va.
Larry was nominated to
compete in this contest
because of previous ach
ievements with his proj
ect. He was selected on
the basis of an abstract
of his paper and a personr-
al questionaire. At the
district Congress next
■month. Larry competed with
25 other students repre
senting several states.
Out of the 25 students, 3
advanced to the National
Congress at W€i8hiGgtcn,
D.C,, in November.
Larry’s paper is enti
tled, "Separation of the
Pare Elements and a Com
plete Study of their Nat
ure" and deals with inor
ganic chemistry.

Although Larry did not
place in the top three, he
was among the highest and
received commendations
from the judges.
Once again this year the
Monograw .Club’ sponsored
the Homecoming game. This
year was quite different
from the preceeding years
for there was only nine
representatives three
from th^ Senior class and
two froft each of the other
classes. These girls were
selected by the Monogram
Club, and the queen was
not voted on by the stu
dent body. There was no
money raised by the
classes on votes. The
queen was chosen by the
votes of the football team.
The candidates were
Elizabeth Armstrong, Celia
Lewis, Marie Thoirpson,
Sara Pat Andrews, Jane
Boatwright, Cathy Nichols,
Ester Smith,Shelia Haywood,
and Sandra McRae.
It was then announced
that Marie Thompson, a
Senior, had been chosen
queen. She was crowned by
Heine Bix>ck, last y6Cr*s
queen, as the hand played
"Sweetheart of Sigma Chi.”
There was a homecoming,
dance after the victory
over Denton. Russ Ford
was in charge of the muaic.
