n January, 1923. THE MIDGET Page 3 Hotel Albemarle ns By Courtesy News-Herald. This hotel, modernly equipped, opened on the first of Febru ary, and v/ill aid greatly in entertaining the State Building and Loan Association on June 19th and other state gatherings. SEE HOW ALBEMARLE IS GROWING! (Arthur Harris.) Albemarle has made some rapid strides in the past six months and is continuing to make them. The mu nicipality has spent about $190,000 for necessary improvements. $140,- 000 of this was spent improving the water system to prevent a water famine similar to that of the sum mer of 1921. A large reservoir will soon be completed, which will furnish Albemarle’s water for years to come. $50,000 is being expended on side walks. Heretofore pedestrians used the streets, and many were the nar row escapes. When this work is brought to completion, sidewalks will line practically all the important streets. Another less expensive, but just as important move was the park ing lines which have been laid off. This not only adds to the beauty of the town, but also to the safety. Re cently the town fathers voted $200,- 000 for paving the few important streets now unpaved. The “Hotel Albemarle” is one of the most important buildings con structed recently. Although not en tirely completed it is being finished with all speed and will be occupied about February 1. This is a four- story, 60-room hotel, with all mod ern conveniences, including a splen did electric elevator. The cost of this building will run about $100,- 000. It will be in charge of Mrs. W. C. Fitzgerald, who has had much ex perience along this line. The Wiscassett Mills Co. has con structed a $75,000 warehouse in or der to take care of its rapid growth. Then in a recent directors’ meeting the capital stock of this mill was in creased from $1,200,000 to $3,600,- 000 by paying its stockholders in stock dividends. Several new business houses have been constructed in the last six months. A. G. Heath and E. E. Snuggs completed a two-story build- j ing, the ground fioor of which is , occupied by the Albemarle Novelty ' Store, one of the best equipped five ! and ten cent stores in the state. A. P. Harris erected a one-story build ing adjoining this and now occupied by Snuggs Drug Co. Many new res idences have been constructed, but there is still plenty of available space for more. The Presbyterians have well under way a handsome church, which, when completed, will cost about $75,000. Along the line of organizations the Lions Club stands out as the most important. This has a membership of the live wires of the town, and backs all movements which tend to better the life of the town.
